To anybody who can help off this forum. Do you get problems with these in the winter on not a to high millage car as in when you start the car up until the engine warms up and a car that is kept outside   ?

We have had a VW mk 2 Scirocco 1.8 GT 2 that was a carburetor which ran very bad in the winter Peco carburetor we then had a Weber fitted it run better some what this car was kept outside as well.Thank you very much to all those who can help.

These are not a carb as such, they all electronically controlled and a mix between a carb and a single injector and are made by Bosch, If it runs rough when cold I would try a new temp sensor but can you post what issues you have?

Most likely be the 1.8 90hp ABS engine (most common in the mk3 1.8)

Reasons why the 1.8 beast won't start in winter are plentiful.... :D

temperature sensor (can be checked with a multimeter)
faulty ignition coil (cracks on insulation), possibly dizzy cap and rotor can cause it too but you would have issues also when warm
cracked/perished rubber mount under injector unit
faulty throttle actuator (gears missing), this would also effect warm idle but much more prominent on cold engine

where in Bristol are you? Might be able to have a look at it Monday (down in Devon for work).

I had a 1.8 (75hp not 90hp) and it doesn't normally suffer issues in winter, neither do the 2.0 engines.

If they don't start they are usually easy to troubleshoot. Easier than a carb.
