Mk2 GTI Electric fault

Hi people,

I've just recently bought my MK2 8V gti and have come across a few glitches. It has a aftermarket GT immobiliser fitted and also contains thee original standard radio/cassette system with an aftermarket ariel. The car seems to clonk out when driving on a few occasions but have checked it out and its not an engine fault. I believe its an electrical fault because my clock/dials don't work neither. The engine runs sweet. Any recommendations as to where i can start looking or what to do? Thanks   :huh: :undecided:

When was the car last serviced? Does the car start fine and idle? It is possble the immobilser in kicking in due to bad wiring/fitting.

The car is due for a service, but it is definitely an electronic fault. it takes ages to tick over from a cold start. but how much of a job is it to take out the immobiliser?

If you think it is electrical I would suggest getting an auto electrian to look at it first before removing anything.

Hi, getting back to the question regarding the Idle. it does tend to go up and down whilst in numeral or stationary. Once the engine is warm the it seems to be ok. I have disconnected the arial and i am no longer using the radio/cassette. As well as the immobiliser light on the side of the dash, the main clocks just above the digital time, the central red light flashes on and off at all times. I've been told its the sensor for the water temperature but i don't believe it is. Could it or is it linked to immobiliser?

The blue sensor can do weird things but I would clean the throttle first before shelling out for a genuine sensor. Clean all the earth points as well.

the red light flashing is the water sensor, in the top of the expansion tank
a common fault .

revs rising & falling could be a split in one of your rubber pipes , worth checking first ,as a cheap & easy fix
