Short commutes
« on: 10 March 2015, 11:38 »
Just wanted to get some colour from you guys on doing very short commutes where the engine barely gets hot.

My work commute is about to change and I will have to get to the train station which is about a mile away.

I just wanted to check if it's harmful for the engine & other parts to do such a commute of 5 mins, twice a day, Monday to Friday. Weekends would be normal use of course.

I have a 59 plate GTI

Thanks!

If it's only a mile, I'd cycle.

I got rid of my GTD for a five mile commute, a one mile commute will kill it. The DPF will not like it at all. Also the GTD barley registered the oil temp in the 5 mile commute the mk7 R on the other hand it nearly fully warm in the same distance and this is in the winter.
Diagonally parked in a parallel universe.
On Order: Mk8 R, Pure White, Reversing Camera, Harmon Kardon, Heated seats all round.

15-20 minute walk

^^ Nice refreshing wake up walk to kick off the day and nice wind down walk back in the evening.  Or cycle.  Either way, leave the car at home.

He has a GTI, so no DPF issues. I'd still cycle tho'.

OP - Do you have to pay to park at the station?

This is such a first world problem! When I had my GTI I was only doing a couple of miles and back to the station and it didn't seem to do it any harm.

I'm now doing about 48 miles each way so diesel makes more sense.

Its the other way round which would cause a problem since the GTI would be hugely expensive to run for a big commute, and the diesel would have DPF problems on a short commute.

Why don't u walk? Driving such a short distance will not be gd for it.

I use to feel bad about a 10 mile drive to work!

Thanks for the replies

Had thought about walking or cycling but at 6am I am not really keen on it, especially in pitch black winter darkness.

Bus was my other option.....but it's a bus.....

I will have to pay for parking but it could come as a package with the season ticket.

Might get a cheap station car.....
