golf gti or gt tdi 170
« on: 07 March 2015, 23:43 »
I am in the market for a golf gti or a gt tdi 170. I cant make my mind up which one will suit me best.
I like the look of the gti better. But should i let my head rule my heart and go for the diesel, for the economy.
What do u guys think ?
My commute is 14 mile round trip. Mostly dual carriageway and then the odd 150 mile trip to Wales to are caravan.
My budget is £5000 ish. Witch i think puts me in the region of average mk5 gtis or poor gt tdi 170. I don't mind going private
or even considering cat d's. Some ideas or buying tips and experiences would be much appreciated. thanks.

GTI driven sensibly enough will net you 35mpg+ and a whole bag of laughs when you don't want to drive so sensibly.

I was swaying towards the gti. The thing is ive had loads of nice petrols in my youth. ie vr6 imprezas and the like but that was years ago. Ive had diesels for years, since the kids came along. I didn't want to buy one then a few months down the line be regretting it cos it supped petrol like it was going out of fashion. I remember a few years ago i had a 325i bm and it was mint but it was murder on fuel. I couldnt find a buyer cos the dealers were all saying no one wants a big engined petrol.

Never understand this arguement  :undecided:

You don't need to be doing x amount if miles to see a saving. In my first year of owning the Audi i only did 10k yet saved money on fuel

5k will get you an OK car. Both have their faults especially as the miles pile on so you're going to need to factor in costs for replacing / maintaining items

As always buy on condition and also test drive several examples as performance can vary between one car and another

If you have a friend or find someone local who has a well maintained one of either, go and check it out as it'll help you gauge what condition other cars you view are truly in.

With the 170 check that its had the injectors replaced. There was a recall on them

Also if the car is over 100k then the DPF may well be fit for the bin so budget for removal and remap. That will give you over 200bhp though
