handbrake's mind of its own
« on: 03 March 2015, 10:47 »
Anyone else had this.

Basically, not every morning, but about 6 times now, ive got in the car started it (push button) put my seatbelt on and as im doing it, the release parking brake message comes up and the handbrake disengages and my car starts to roll back on it own. No fault on my dash or via obd2, so I bet the dealer wont be able to 'locate' it.

Am I alone?

Not had it on mine - I've got keyless too and it's manual.

Is yours DSG or manual? Actually, probably manual or you'd be in 'park' which would stop it rolling.

indeed I am manual, its very weird I will try experimenting in the mornings but so far i believe that it doesnt matter if my seat belt is on or not, shortly after i start the car, the handbrake turns itself off, and weirdly I dont recall ever hearing the usual whine noise

I think I would be leaving it in gear every time I leave the car just in case. I have a DSG but noticed if you take your seatbelt off it puts the handbrake on automatically, whilst stationary (not tried it moving).
Is is something to do with the clutch? I think its supposed to turn off when the clutch is raised slightly, as if you are driving off.

Yeah i leave it in gear, but to start the car I have to have my clutch down, hence the roll unless as i do now, i have my foot on the brake too.

No, dont think thats clutch related mate, basically i'm rolling before i have my foot on the gas or moving off the clutch, plus there is always the message, telling me to release the brake, even tho its released itself. There is no extra work from the engine or strain on the brakes or clutch or anything, its as it you turn the car on and it just gives up on the brakes, no other motion is used.

What happens if you put your belt on and then start the car - does the HB disengage as soon as the car starts or stay on till you pull away

see thats what im unsure about, i think the problem is im used to jumping in, turning on and then putting my seatbelt on, but ill give it a few goes as it doesnt happen everytime and see if this stops it. Either way thats still not right, just annoying its not bringing up a fault. Also, it only does it with the engine running, it doesnt 'let go' just on ignition.

Yes, 6 whole times  lol no mate, definitely not.

Well tried this morning with the seat belt in and it didn't disengage, will keep trying as it wasn't everyday and will let you know if it happens again.
