Wheel hop moan and XDS the cure!
« on: 02 March 2015, 17:49 »
Hi,

I've had my car since start of January 2015 (DSG). It has around 50k miles on the clock and always been serviced etc (purchased from VW).

Wheel hop is starting to get on my tits! I've never had a car with so much hop before. The car is completely standard with good rubber. If I line up straight and floor it, 9 times out of 10 it will hop. However if I have my wheel turned a quarter or so in left or right and floor it, it launches without spin or hop all the time. Can only do this on a bend obviously. It got me thinking, the reason it launches is because of XDS?(mine is set to 2). It's the only explanation I can think of.  :undecided:

Has anyone else noticed this?

I need to visit the dealer anyway as my front sensors beep like crazy on uneven floors, might ask them to look into it if it a warn mount.

Not sure about the bend explanation, but why dont you get Super-pro Anti Lift Kit or a Dogbone mount, both of which reduce wheel hop to a minimum.

I only ever hop in heavy rain, and even then its rare. Think i might be swapping to an ST soon, so all my parts might be available.

XDS measures the difference between the two front wheels thats why it activates when the wheels turned. Its not launch control!

Traction is always horrid at this time of the year as the ambient temp is a bit low for the tyre compound - hence winter/summer tyres.

I had a dog bone mount on a seat leon fr+ and hated it. The vibration was so much, the standard one went back in after a week! I guess on a petrol it won't be as bad.

I know it's not launch control, but it sure feels like that. I feel maybe vw missed a trick as from an uneducated point of view, it works better than traction control which just cuts power.

Powerflex road insert calms down after a few thousand miles.

As for the rest...

1. Limitations of FWD.
2. Tyres - as you will know good rubber is a must on any car really.
3. Suspension - softer OEM bushes can be replaced by firmer OEM rubber (Audi S3 LCA) or Poly bushes.
4. Engine Mounts - I don't have direct experience but the vibrations on some kits may be too harsh for daily use but on the positive side there is less engine movement.

Out of the above tyres have probably the biggest impact, the difference between 3mm tread and a newish performance tyre is noticeable. I recommend GY Eagle F1 ASY 2.
