I honestly think the GTD is faster on the motorway though.

The GTI will be within its peak torque range at motorway speeds, so will scoot off in 6th gear, whereas the GTI's torque will be higher up the rev range.

Put a GTI in 4th gear at 70mph next to a GTD in 6th gear at the same speed then accelerate, the difference will show itself then.

Long term average MPG since new is just under 35mpg. Mixture of driving, although quite a lot of short journeys.

A decent 60 mile run on the motorway at the weekend returned 41/42 mpg, sitting at 70mph on the cruise in Eco mode.

The onboard fuel consumption is also pretty accurate compared to my manually recorded details as well.

thanks for the replies guys

makes a mockery of the brochure MPG figures !

My TTS "JUST" does 30MPG on a long run very careful driving and average low 20's which i find shocking for a 4 CYL turbo..  MY previous BMW 135i coupe (6cyl, 3.0 Turbo) easily did 35 mpg on a run...

I am quite surprised that for modern cars the MPG is so low ? Is it the weight, all the computers that need powering !?

My ancient 2004 BMW 330ci coupe 3.0 (230 BHP) easily also did 35 MPG and hardly ever dropped below 30.. even in hard driving i got 26-28.. and I have a 1997 Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo (220 BHP / 220 Lb Ft so enar identical output to a GTi), it will easily do high 20's all day long and mid to high 30's on a run..

So I am struggling to see much progress in the last 15 years with VAG ?!!

According to my fuelly account, my GTD is averaging 46.5 mpg over it's lifetime of just over 12000 miles. I should add I've only had two really good motorway journeys in that time with my typical journeys being 12-20 miles (most urban) going to work and back.

Considering my journeys, I'm pretty pleased with that.

I think with the ever increasing march towards Zero emissions, and the propensity for things like Diesel particulate filters now being required on all new diesel vehicles, as well as the fact vehicles today tend to be heavier than cars of yesteryear (despite the claims), means it's becoming ever more difficult to see massive increases in MPG usual conventional internal combustion engines with all these regulations and tech strangling the engine. I think the future of massively better MPG will be in technologies like Hybrids and extensions of the VW cylinder deactivation technologies used in the 1.4 engine.

Factor in the extra drag from 4WD and additional weight.

m135i auto has 8 speed box as well.

I feel the same about the 2.0TFSI. In most guises the performance to economy ratio just isn't high enough. I'm hoping they'll make the move to some sort of hybrid technology, or ACT.

15 years? My Mk2 GTI does 34mpg. I guess the progress is the Mk2 is not a safe, sporty but practical, family car. It's strange looking back remembering the days when it was considered to be all those things.

Less difference in the mk7 as the GTI has 258 lb ft at 1500 rpm and is lower geared than a GTD in 6th but the GTD does 'feel' more punchy despite the stop clock telling a different story.

You need to take at least 10%maybe even 20%in some cases off the manufacturers claimed mpg's from all cars not just VW's. Mpg tests are done on rolling road cycles with no outside interference at all. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if a 4 stone child is driving to save even more weight
