Upgrade RNS510 Golf GTD
« on: 01 February 2015, 20:46 »
Hi guys,

Is there anyone in the Surrey area that would be willing to remove a RCD310 stereo and refit a RNS510 for a fee of course

I understand there may be some coding issues so I guess one of those fancy Vagcom units would be needed so that I retain all the functions, also the current stereo is connected to the phone prep that is installed so this would also need to be routed through the new stereo.

I'd have a go myself but I haven't got the tools or the balls lol

My car is. 2012 golf GTD if that helps

Many thanks in advance guys and feel free to message me back if you can help or offer advice

Steve

There is nothing to it. Simply unclip the surrounding trim, undo the 4 torx screws to remove the old radio, then screw in the new one and refit the trim having stuck the GPS aerial somewhere under the dash. The wiring is identical, so nothing to alter there and everything will work, other than seeing the compass and nav directions int the MFD. This is the only bit that needs coding.

I did it a couple of weeks ago & it really is the simplest task, as dubber has stated it is just plug-in & play.

I'm not great with things related to cars but I did it in less than an hour, I would recommend doing it in the day time though! As I tried to do it the evening which made it a bit of nightmare faffing around with torches! But it really is a simple job, even in the dark!

As per the above replies its a fairly simple retrofit. Just unclip the fascia and undo the 4 torx screws holding the unit in. You'll need to install a GPS antenna above the RNS 510 but apart from that no real complexities. The phone wiring will be part of the Quadlock so you don't need to worry about that, it will just swap straight over.

The only piece of functionality the VCDS (VAG COM) coding enables is Sat Nav instructions in the instrument cluster. So you won't get those until the coding change is done, but the rest of the system will function Ok

Thanks for your reply guys, I'll think I will give it a go myself then

A couple of other questions from this newbie

Is there some special tool I need to take the facia off and a special screwdriver.

And lastly, what's the differences with all the Rns units I've seen A,B,C P,Q,F versions

Thanks again for your replies

To remove the interior trim you just need to pull it carefully. You can get special trim removal tools to do that but they aren't 100% necessary.

Once undone then yes you will require a special Torx screwdriver, think its T15 if I remember right.

The different revisions are documented and newer versions can bring benefits like DAB radio reception, LED screen and SSD.
