dash warning lights specifically hand brake
« on: 19 January 2015, 14:42 »
my handbrake light shines bright when the ignition is switched on, but as soon as the cars started it become very dimm and starts flickering.

the handbrake switch & warning light operates normally when the car is off and ignition is on.

any idea whats going on or places for me to to check?

1. Handbrake switch is faulty
2. Brake fluid low or faulty sensor inside fluid tank
3. Abs sensor fault

Best thing to do is scan it.

Scan it for serious faults first as posted.
If this is clean then its probably just a bad connection or earth leak etc.

My last golf did exactly this along with dim flickery dash readout.
I took it all apart fixed the handbrake light but ended up making the dash read out worse.....

I'm only getting dim warning light and flickery when car is on, I'm thinking Earth leak what places to check ? And also what makes for example the oil warning light switch off once the car is started , is there a relay triggered by the  Ecu as sometimes I don't get any warning lights when turning the ignition but the car starts fine.

When I removed the engine from my 95 16v GTI I disconnected the battery but needed to lock the golf, so I isolated  the ecu and reconnected the battery.
What I found was the hand brake warning light was eliminated on the dash with the ignition off I turned the ignition on and it stayed on, when the hand brake was released the light stayed on but was dim.
The gearbox was still fitted just the engine was removed so this led me to believe it was just a earth issue in the engine bay or loam to the speedo cluster.
When the engine was refitted I had no problem with the handbrake warning light.
New toy1990 Scirocco I feel a 16v conversion coming on.
