Boot open symbol while driving.
« on: 14 January 2015, 21:32 »
Evening all, while on the way to work today I happened to notice that the boot open symbol on the dashboard was semi illuminated. It was get brighter and darker and them disappear for a while and then it would randomly return again.

Does anyone know a possible cause for this as it is annoying and quite distracting once you notice it. I tried having a search but found nothing...

Just to be clear the boot is definitely closed.

Just had the same thing! Took the panel off the boot to find the washer jet pipe had come loose and was dripping water onto the boot catch micro switch. I had to take it off a second time because the water jet hose was still leaking after pushing it back into place. Ended up cutting it back a bit and putting a piece of rubber hose with tie grips to get a better join. Replacing the boot catch was pretty straight forward once the panel is removed. I had the very same symptoms you are describing, which later developed into my alarm going of at random times - usually through the night!

Thanks both. That's a better solution (or easier to remedy) than I was expecting. I was wondering if it was a grounding issue somewhere.

What needs to be replaced? Do you have part numbers etc.

I've replaced the whole tailgate and swapped handles etc before it's just a case of remembering what to do.

This is the PART NUMBER 1J6 827 505 B B41. The replacing is really simple - there are 2 torx screws one in each of the boot panel handle mouldings. Once they are removed is just a case of prizing the panel free, a little tricky, but simple. Once the panel is off there are 2 bolts holding the catch and the actuator to unhook. The washer pipe you can see quite easily and it will be obvious if it has been leaking. I tried just pushing it back on, but after a couple of weeks I had the same problem again. I ended up cutting the hard plastic water feed hose back about an inch down from where it had fitted to the wiper mechanism and put a piece of silicone pipe in its place, held with tie grips. This has definitely stopped the leak - but just waiting for my 2nd catch to arrive. Lesson learned in not trusting the water feed to hold, simply by pushing it back into its original place!
