Service Pack Question & a Strange Problem...
« on: 10 January 2015, 16:43 »
Hi Guys,

First up the question regarding the Service Pack. I collected my GTI on 1st March 2014 and ordered it with the Inclusive Service pack. The car has covered just over 11k miles and it's started to advise that it will need an oil change in 800 miles.

I called in to Liverpool VW today as I was driving past and the girl on the Service Desk asked for my registration and mileage. After a quick look on the computer she said that the car is on a variable service interval and it wasn't due to be serviced until 2yrs old or 24k miles but they could do it if I wanted at a cost of £139... To which I replied that the car is asking to be serviced now and I paid for a service pack so the cost should be nothing... She then said that actually, the service intervals were every 10k miles and as I've gone over the service mileage then they might not authorise the service to be done within the pack...

I explained that when I collected the car, the sales guy told me that the car would tell me when it needed some work, and how else am I supposed to know when to bring it in...

She's going to speak to the service manager (who wasn't in) and ring me on Monday.

Can anyone advise me if she is correct, and is it a bit of tough luck for me and I'll have to pay for it to be serviced? What are your experiences?

The second thing... The car seems to be having some difficulty locking the doors when moving. I've checked that the doors are locked when I touch the door handle by taking the key out of range and pulling the handle, but I've set the auto lock to lock the doors at 10mph (or whatever speed it suggested), and last week it stopped doing it. Even when I manually press the lock button on the door it won't lock. Each time I set off I can hear the electronics trying to lock the doors, but the lock light (normally turns orange when locked), stays white... Anyone else had this?

Bit frustrated to be honest...

The cars are set up for variable servicing by default and come with long life oil. At PDI the dealer should have changed it to fixed interval servicing (annual/10k miles, whichever comes first) if yours was bought with a service pack. The service pack doesn't cover the variable servicing regime.

Usually if you are on fixed term, they will not allow you to get the first service done after 11k miles - if you had been on fixed term and you had ignored the "service now!" message in the MFD every time you switched the engine on beyond 9400 miles then I could see their point.

Unless you specifically asked for the car to stay on variable servicing, the dealership has cocked up. If you had asked to stay on variable servicing they should have advised you that the service pack you were buying was not suitable and so should have refunded it.

Thanks Monkeyhanger, big help that.

I've got the finance docs out and double checked and the service pack is mentioned in the contract, it was something I made sure was in the deal so the dealership have cocked up and not changed it at PDI stage. It obviously helps that I know that when they ring me on Monday.

I bought the service pack,  and noticed in the mfd that they had left it in variable mode at pdi. Every 10k :)

Yeah ours was still variable too, they changed it when I asked no problem. The comment I got back was good job you noticed as you wouldn't have got the free service otherwise - I presume due to the over mileage issue.

Quick update on this one... to be fair to Liverpool VW, they have accepted they should have changed it at PDI and are carrying out the service on Friday this week in line with the Service Pack.

Now just the weird door lock/autolock problem to solve!

A happy outcome. Good to see.

I didn't realise you could only have it on annual not variable either.
Obviously I didn't read the small print!
Mine came still set up on variable servicing but from the word go I fully intended to have it on yearly servicing but didn't know it HAD to be on it.
I just rang the dealer at 12 months and asked if it was ok to book in then told them that the battery was also on the blink...

To be honest, I didn't realise either but I'm glad I caught it now!

The car was serviced this morning, excellent service from the garage to be fair. I waited with the car and they only took 2 hours whilst I was tucked away in the waiting area getting on with some work, logged on to their Wifi. The helpful staff kept offering to make me drinks and I felt like a welcome customer. Good news!

However, they think there might be a wiring fault with the car as the doors will not lock from the inside. They have booked it in for a full week from 2nd Feb to investigate... Slightly worrying news.

Where can I check on the car which interval it is set to and how long until next service. Mine is a year old in a couple of weeks but only 5k miles.
