Disappointed

Firstly hello guys I'm a newbie and looking for a bit advice, Just got a mk5 golf gti dsg, great cond, well serviced etc 108k miles, lovely car but disappointed with it, it's slow slow slow..To put it in perspective it seems to catapult off the mark 1st -2nd gear but mid range is poor, it seems to run out of pull 2k before red line in 3rd n 4th and it's painful waiting for it to change gear, when it does change I get 300rpm of pull then it's out of pull again for next 2k til it changes again and on and on, it does 106mph thru 1st dip on A local private rd me bmw 320ddid 115mph thru, jag xjr 145mph, black Nissan 300tt 155mph, our pug 107 does 97 lol...  Any idea what or where I should be looking? Boost leak? Maybe ? Any help would be great cheers

Really does sound like an inlet pipe or the diverter valve has failed. If you can fault scan too, that may help if its a MAF sensor issue (unlikely as you'll have an engine light on).

Also, when was the DSG box serviced?

FYI - top speed of a GTI is about 137mph.

Hi cheers for reply, thought they were faster than that! Autotrader pits them at 147mph! Not arguing tho , just surprised, just looked thru history and can't see anything to say dsg was serviced ever! , when you say inlet pipe? Do you mean a leak, is diverted valve a common fault? Thanks again

You're right, that is the top speed, 137mph is the fastest I've taken mine (off public roads of course). With regards to pipes, if you jack the car up and remove the under tray, you'll see two thick pipes going into the intercooler at the front of the engine bay. The connections are known to fail and this causes real loss in boost pressure (i.e. no turbo). Also, just check the air feed and box at the top of the engine, ensure it's all as it should be and not blocked.

And as mentioned before, if you can find someone who can do a full fault code scan that'll be a bonus.

Thanks very much for that, might pull the diverter and check it out, engine throws a wobbler when I take oil cap off so Pcv might be ok, should be able to have a go on tues so il report back, thanks again

Had car scanned today, it came up with low boost pressure like on the diverter valve sticky I was shown! He's gonna do it on Monday when a ramps free, should I order a "revision d" as I'm going to get a remap once it's running correctly... Assuming it is the dv of course

There are 2 revisions, D or G. They vary slightly and the one to chose really is a varied subject also. I'd opt for the revision D personally, but at Stage 1 tuning there's no difference.

A lot more expensive, but does make a difference in throttle response. Some people report apparent boost leaks with these but I've not had that problem myself (I run a GFB DV+ upgrade).

i've asked the guys at r-tech about the dv+ upgrade a couple of times and they just recommend the OEM revision over the upgrade for some reason.

mine was torn and when i had the remap done they swapped it for the revised part... think i had the d version and that made a hell of a difference just by changing the defective dv

As mentioned, the DV+ upgrade has reports of boost leaks from higher tuned engines, I've not experienced it myself but a lot of respectable tuners (companies and individuals) will agree with the above and say just run an OEM part.

Well thanks to this forum and the swift response telling me to check the DV I now have a much much quicker gti! It even sounds different? The pull is now great and puts a big grin on lol! Seriously what a difference, you'd think it was a different car, I can honestly say it's the best £41.97 I've ever ever spent ever. I ended up just changing it myself, bit awkward but more fiddly than hard, the old one was cattled , it was ripped to bits! Old one was a revision B and I'm guessing the original? New one is a revision G , which they gave me ! I didn't think to ask for a "d" , if I get it mapped I guess it's another £40 for a "d" ! Not the end of the world and at least I know I can do it myself now! Thanks again, thoroughly enjoying the car now...
