Steering wheel off centre when going straight.
« on: 02 January 2015, 19:54 »
Hi chaps, I'm not having much luck recently

A few days a go we had a good covering of snow, which of course has exposed quite few pot holes!!

I've driven out a few times since it's snowed but not hit any of the holes unduly hard?

When out in the car today I noticed the steering wheel was off centre when going in a straight line?

If not the pot holes, could anyone suggest a cause of this please. When I let go of the wheel it doesn't pull to the left or right, just straight as normal, but it's off centre?

Any ideas please?

Regards,

Mart

To not want to state the obvious, I would think that the tracking may have been knocked out of alignment

It will be an alignment issue. It could be front or rear. It will need a full alignment check at the dealers or someone with a Hunter type machine that knows how to use it.

As said, get a 4 wheel Hunter (or similar) laser alignment check.  It only takes one pothole to throw it out.

I've had this problem with mine since I bought it a few months ago. I had the front wheels aligned but that didn't seem to fix it, although it wasn't with the Hunter machine.

Mine was suffering saw tooth rear tyre wear due to being out of alignment. I had new rear tyres fitted and on the drive to the dealers to get the alignment done, the steering wheel was off center. So just altering the rear geometry by fitting 'square' tyres, was enough to upset the tracking. It just shows how fine the margins are.

Thanks very much for the replies,

The steering was perfect before and I only noticed the off centre steering wheel a day or so a go. As I remember hitting a couple of small pot holes, I can only assume it was that (very frustrating).

I'll have a ring around but any idea where I can can a Hunter alignment near Newark Notts? And approximate cost of the alignment?

Mart
