engine mount upgrade
« on: 30 December 2014, 14:05 »
so it turns out the remap has caused the engine mount to come loose and has caused a bit of damage, i'm currently looking for a new downpipe and aircon pipe but that's another matter.

what i need to sort out is the engine mount so it doesn't happen again. does anyone know of a way to strengthen or upgrade the engine mounts to handle the extra torque created by the remap?

and if anyone knows of a cheaper/better alternative to the £700 OEM downpipe that i'm being quoted by VW that would be much appreciated!

I'm assuming you drive a mk5 GTI? There's plenty of options regarding upgraded engine mounts, Vibratechnics or Revo are some good options, check out the selection available here;

http://www.awesomegti.com/car/vw/golfmk5?subpart=Mounts

Initially, you'll be best investing in replacement OEM top left and right mounts and upgrade the dog bone and sub frame mounts. This should help you stiffen then engine up and stop it moving about but by replacing the main top left and right mounts with OEM you won't get harsh vibrations in the cabin as upgraded mounts will shake your teeth out for a while till the wear in!

For replacing the down pipe, you're probably best going for a stainless steel sports downpipe from the likes of Milltek or BCS. While those two companies are the most expensive systems, they're by far the best quality. You will need to get your R-Tech map tweaked accordingly but you'll unlock more power and economy by going down this route.

If you're replacing broken things, upgrade them to after market items which will last much longer than the car will!

I'd say do a full set of mounts from the same manufacturer so you have a balanced and evenly distributed load across them all. I have a full set of Revo mounts and the difference is profound. Yes there's a little NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) but the improvements far outweigh this, in fact I quite like it. Car is sharper on throttle response as you no longer have to overcome movement in the engine mounts - touch the throttle and it's at the wheels instantly. The engine noise is also quite addictive now.

The Golf was made 'soft' to appeal to the masses after all.

I've heard that the vibration calms down after a few thousand miles when the mounts wear in a little bit... It's definitely a worth while upgrade, do it once and forget about doing it again.

As mentioned, you can opt to replace all 4 at the same time, however I've read (through the internet and Performance VW magazine) that it's quite common to replace the torque mount, then the subframe and finally the top engine mounts. This is a progressive way which allows you to find a comfortable balance of performance vs. comfort. But it's a personal call and I can't say which is better to do.

Personally, I'm replacing the torque mount first and going from there.

ok, deliberating over these engine mounts and also slightly confused.

these are the set from revo but the terminology is different to what's been suggested by you guys. you say i need torque, subframe and then left and right but can't see those descriptions on the link below.

http://www.revotechnik.com/product-details/engine-hardware/fsi-tsi-engine-transmission-pendulum-mount#.VNOWtJWzXcs

also, been chatting with my dad (who's a mechanic from way back) and he doesn't see the point of upgrading the mounts as he said it was the bolt that sheared and by replacing the mounts it's still going to have the same bolt and he thinks it wouldn't make any difference. i tried telling him there's a reason, why would you have the option to upgrade if it was pointless? but his argument was that people make things just to take your money with no gain to you.

so i'm all a bit confused now. i still want to get them done as i want my car to perform as best as possible, it's been remapped to 250bhp after all so i want to be able to drive it that way and not worried about shearing engine mount bolts when pulling away!

any help would be much appreciated!
