Radiator fan problem GTi 1.8 20v turbo 1999
« on: 21 December 2014, 16:47 »
Hi guys, I have a problem with my radiator fan. Quite often when the temp gets up to 90 the fan will come on and go off every 4 - 5 seconds and continue to do this all the time, even when the engine cools down it continues to do this. It doesn't do it all the time but it is starting to happen more often than not. I have taken my car to two garages which have both plugged in computers but no faults are showing. The temperature never rises above 90 so it is still doing its job but something is obviously wrong. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Thanks Alex.

sounds like the small fan isn't working so it relies on the big fan, diagnostic checks won't show anything you'll need to bridge the thermoswitch on the rad to test.

Hi mate,

All info on rad fans and their issues including how to fix are here:

My fans are currently playing up exactly as yours are, and I need to do the 'resistor mod' to solve it.. A lot cheaper than replacing the fans and it's a permanent fix.

Please take a look at that link I posted
