Normal Oil temp?
« on: 22 October 2003, 10:14 »
What kind of oil temps should I be getting from my mk1 Golf GTi?

I've got a serious coolant overheating/pouring all over the shop problem, but when driving the oil temp on the MFA never went over the 100 mark, I thought this was alright?

Cheers,
Dave

100 seems OK - for normal driving

"coolant overheating/pouring all over the shop "
that sounds nasty mate - split pipe/head gasket/heater?

same prob as 'jelly' in teh mk1 specific forum. I'll know bore you with the saga!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was driving to MOT centre of all places, stopped at roundabout after about 10 mins of driving and coolant steam started pouring from bonnet.

Obviously, I stopped to see what the monkeys is going on!  Coolant was pissing all over the place, coming from the header tank cap.  Let it all cool down, removed cap and refilled (was at patrol station). It needed at least 2L!!

Once it was cool, drove (V slowly!) off again, at next roundabout (Apex Corner North London, 2mins later), same prob again. Stopped let it cool , refilled. did this another couple of times, including once just before the MOT place so it would be fine for that!

Passed MOT, then drove V slowly back, stopping at Petrol stations on the way to let it cool and refill coolant. Every time i was driving for more than about 10 mins it went again.
---------------------------------

The whole time the oil temp on the MFA never went above 98!

I'm going to change the V belt, stat, flush the coolant system and get a new header tank cap, Any ideas?!?!? Could the fan not workign properly cause something of this severity?  Only once in all of my stops was the fan actually running when I checked under the bonnet.

I need to get me a haynes manual.  no pipes seem split, it all seems to be coming from the cap.

Thermostat? cooling fan? water pump? if these are ok do a compression test.

If the coolant temp is indicating normal then it sounds like its either the coolant filler cap or head gasket. Go for the cap, they can fail and are cheap to replace.
Oil temp sounds normal but I'd be paying more attention to my coolant temp gauge with this problem.

Blimey, I got it right! :o Glad you got it sorted.

golfvr6, its not like you to not hit the nail on the head, I think you're spending too much time ranting about French cars. :P Get yourself back into these technical posts where you and modulator are so damn good. ;)

I didn't suggest the cap as someone else had already, probably you Rich. You're right always replace the cheap bits first!

Went for another 20min drive tonight and all is fine, so happy days!

Tomorrow (well today now) Thursday, Going to flush through the cooling system, change stat and a few pipes that need changing.

I'll take a pic of my old V belt....its scary, its actualyl got no notches left on it at some points, dodgy as hell.

Don't forget to check your antifreeze after losing all that coolant.......its getting colder now.   :(

Oh and don't worry, golfvr6 and I aren't bickering. I just think he's getting a little too bogged down in the chat section and we're missing out on his good technical posts.
golfvr6..........you have mail.
