Rebecca:

Who said you were just a pretty face? Smart, pretty lady, that's what you are!

Your post jogged my memory. I was going to change the Bridgestone S001 tyres on my 6GTI to something different, but remember checking out the alternatives which had pathetic rim protection in comparison. So I suffered with the S001 tyres which tramped, spun and roared.

Damn it, where rubber is concerned, winning is so elastic!

Asker, I agree. Tyres, and their relative merits are sooo elastic, and in terms of choosing the right one, it's a veritable minefield, there are so many slightly differing versions even of the same tyre!!!  Just think how many people out there haven't got a clue what rubber they've got (on their cars ), but I don't suppose they give it a second thought.  It is for us car enthusiasts nerds to ramble on and on about.  And, oh how we love to!

So, the Michelin PSS - rim protection?  Illuminate me?  With, without, good, bad, non-existent??  I made bookmark links to various relevant tyre sites but God knows which iPad car sub folder I've saved them in??  Think I need to indulge in a spot of virtual housekeeping :embarrassed:

PS: you are very kind to give me the benefit of the doubt of NOT being a wizened old hag

It seems that the Bridgestone S001 and RE050 tyres have top rated Rim Protection. Tiresome tyres which provide best wheel protection but ruin the car in other ways.

It's a conspiracy

You can have a great tyre but rubbish rim protection OR a poor tyre with great rim protection, but you SHALL NOT have great tyre and great rim protection.  Life is cruel

There are a couple of guys on vwroc who have changed from RE050 tyres to PSS ones. I'll ask them about Rim Protection on the Michelin PSS tyres right now!

That sums it perfectly. From what I have read the Michelins are not too bad in this respect. Ah well, just have to park miles off the kerb: in the middle of the street would be safest!

Doesn't work, trust me I tried it.  You can spot my car a mile off by it's vast distance from the nearest kerb.  But somehow those unruly kerbs seem to jump up and bite my wheels

No, thank YOU my sweet!
Rim Protection or lack of it is a bit like Greece. Great food, great weather, but no money.

There is a joke going around:
What is the difference between organised crime and the Tsipras govt? Crime is organised, the govt is not! So true. This lot are dangerous.

Off for a stroll in the sunshine now!

Rim protection is a waste of time. To me its like discussing the best place to have an ashtray on a bike.
If you think the rubber is going to be strong enough to withstand the weight of a car you are going to be sadly disappointed.
The problem is, you will get folk who believe it will protect the wheel completely and no doubt disregard how close they park to the kerb thinking they are safe.

Chris, the paint on 2 of my weights has started to come off because of the pressure hose.
I've literally just bought some enamel paint to paint it back on, although not had a chance to try it yet.

That puts me in mind of something I saw last week, whilst I was sat at a traffic light junction.  On the outside of me, this bloke on a push bike pulled up, riding one handed because he had a fag and a can of beer in the other.  He was p!ssed out of his head and all over the place.  I'll be very surprised if he's still alive.  A handlebar mounted ashtray and a beer can holder would have been just the job
