Caprigreen: Yes, the Bridgestones are rock hard, they will last a long time if the car is driven carefully, if you're only keeping the cars 3 years on limited miles, you may never wear them out.

My biggest regret with my GTD is that I didn't bin the Bridgestones early on. With better rubber and the DTUK box (tramping easily with and without the DTUK box), I may have never ordered the R in the pursuit of some reasonable traction. As much as I dislike driving DSG, i've had a good few gos in my Dad's DSG GTD which came on Dunlops and it is very hard to lose traction with his, even now he's inherited my DTUK box.

I estimate my mileage to be be around 8k a year. I saw the fronts on a demo nearly gone at 8k although i think it had had a very hard life. It would be a shame to find a huge difference when I am about to sell the car. I will probably keep the car until the MK8 arrives. Difficult one as tyres are not cheap.

With tyre rotation and driving it a little harder than I think you have, all 4 of my tyres are almost done in at 16500 miles. Probably would get to 18k miles before needing a change if the R wasn't so close.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Here's an update after 1 week with new Conti 5s on both fronts coming from Bridgestones....

Not a single tramp or wheel spin or orange light on the dash since they were replaced. I took it fairly easy the first few days but I'm no light driver and over the last 3 or 4 days pulling away in 1st or accelerating in 2nd gear very hard (3/4 throttle down at least) and the car shoots away with amazing grip and not a single orange flash or wheel spin.

Anyone who has issues with Bridgestones and are reluctant to replace before their time (whether its will another tyre be better or I can't warrant the cost), I'd suggest you do because it makes a huge difference to your driving confidence in the car (unless you're a Sunday driver in an expensive car, then it won't!)

By the way, my front two Bridgestones were equally worn down at 9300K ish miles!!

I had exactly the same experience.

Bodgestones fitted from the factory, thought the tramping was normal.
After fitting the Contis it was like a different car.

VW really should not be fitting these sub standard tyres on the GTI, it lets their amazing product down, badly.

Goodyear eagle F1's

+1 brilliant tyres! I've had them on the front for a few months now. Hardly ever get any loss of traction (tramping) in the dry anymore. I think the compound of rubber is softer but will probably wear quicker. I don't care though as it improves grip which is what I desperately wanted.

 I'll be going for Yokohama Advan V105's when I replace my tyres on the Gti next year, I had the V103's on my CTR and found them to be very good all round performance. Blackcircles price looks good too.

I wouldn't recommend the Advans. Just yesterday had I replaced my front two with Hankook Ventus V12 evo. I only had the car since February 2014 with 16k miles on the clock and the tyre wear was terrible. They were good the first 6 months but after that, considerate tramping and very bad handling in wet conditions.  My rears will only sustain till the end of summer and I got the Hankooks for a good price to try them out and maybe consider doing the rear tyres as well. The car feels very different now and the ride leans more to comfortability which is what I look for. Haven't tried performance wise but it felt more responsive and "gripped" to the gravel, even compared to when I first got the car. So all in all, I wouldn't go back to the Yokohama's again but it could be a different case for you and they might fulfill your needs. It all comes back to the driving style.

well I had my bridgestones replaced on the front on Saturday..they were 94% worn after just over 10k miles  ( I am entirely responsible for this...I enjoy my car at appropriate times!)

went for the pilot sport 3 's as I liked the pilot sports previous incarnation on my octavia vRs

off to the west coast of scotland at the weekend for 2 weeks, so they will get a thorough workout!

some good deals around at the moment..the contis and the pilot sports were both under a 100 quid a tyre, fitted.

My front tyres need replacing on my mk7 PP Gti, on 19" wheels, I've been pleased with the SP sport Maxx GT's on there, decent grip wet and dry and no complaints at wear as I'm just at 17k miles admittedly most of it gentle m-way work..... However, ringing round the local independents they are not able to get straight replacements. So I'm wondering if I should look at Goodyear F1's which are pricey at £140 - £145 each fitted, also been offered Falkens at £125....., possibly also considering Michelins? Do they do the Ps3's  in 19"? Appreciate any views on options please? I live in sunny Berkshire with a couple of good independents nearby.....
Cheers
