I found Camskill the cheapest to buy mail order and then got them fitted by a local place. Just have to watch - a lot of garages won't fit tyres that you haven't purchased from them.

All in, 2x Vredestein Sessanta, fitted for £175.

Ross whereabouts did you go?
The only place I've found and more importantly trusted was a wee place away over near Costco. Which is a fair jaunt.

E for rolling resistance.... lower rolling resistance actually mean less dry grip.
so your saying a tyre with E rating for rolling resistance is better than a C rating?? A tyre with C and A or B and A is surely better than an E rated tyre?

The EU ratings only care about fuel economy (low rolling resistance) and stopping distance in wet. Neither of those really correlate with handling. The grippier tyres (softer compound) have higher rolling resistance, like my vreds which get an F (which is the same as Michelin super sports)!

Yes, A is low rolling resistance F is high.  Rolling resistance is all about fuel economy, if you want grip, you want higher rolling resistance.

Didn't you read what the man from Tombstone said on the other thread?

Yes i read it!! All he's done is lift the corporate spiel from Bridgestone blurb. From what your saying a c rated tyre is a good compromise instead of an f?? With an f rated tyre it may well give more grip but less fuel economy?

Dry grip is inversely proportional to rolling resistance (aka fuel economy). More reaction to the road.

Wet grip is inversely proportional to noise. Wet grip is provided mainly by water dispersion channel (aka "tread") and the more efficient will have more, which makes more noise.

Is there a perfect tyre? Of course not, otherwise they all would be making them. Its all about compromise and so its all down to you choosing the balance that you want.

Wear also comes into it (unless you are made of money and racing on a track).

Personally I wouldn't take a tyre with average or less wet grip, because I want to live to enjoy my Golf another day.  I'd choose that, then a nice dry grip and stuff the fuel economy and the wearing :)

So the Michelin would be top choice for most with maybe a conti 5 next. This explanation is great Fred, cheers. Maybe explains why I think the conti2's on my gtd are actually quite good.

Soft tyres are grippy and quiet, but don’t last long.

Fred Flintstone round granite tyres last for ages, have nowt in the way of grip and are noisy as hell!
