Can anyone help identify my car ?
« on: 06 December 2014, 16:39 »
Hi newbie to this forum here.Im hoping someone can shed some light on the model of my mk2 that is in question.
I've recently taken my car in for a rebuild and the garage owner hit me with the news he thinks it's a rare car ,a 2000e.!!
I've done a dvla check like he did and it came back with the manufacture date as 1989 and 2000cc engine.
Now I'm a bit green in the engine department and I know there's plenty of experts on here who can probably clear this up in no time, but he's telling me that Volkswagen only put a 2.0 litre mk2 engine in the 2000e.
Hope this isn't a silly question but I've always thought it was a 1.8 as I was told when I bought it.

My understanding is that VW never made a 2l mk2, BUT there were companies who did conversions, such as oettinger. So if it is an oettinger, it is rare. It junk they put out about 170bhp
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Lots of places did the 2.0 conversion and GTi engineering was a popular one.

Would be very rare if has a Oettinger lump. Would be quite obvious if it is.

The engine in it now is a 2.0 8v. I'm just wondering why it's registered as a 2.0 from original.

How do you know it was 2.0 from the start? It could have been converted at any point, the dvla informed, and therefore the dvla would display 2.0, surely?

The guy looked on the van plate this morning and it shows it as a 16v from manufacturer. He's also found heated seat wires. The car has electric windows as well. Now I know all of this could have been fitted post manufacturer so to clear it up on phoning VW  tommorow with the vin number to see if they can shed some light on it.

Sounds like you have a "GTI Engineering" car. Car supplied by VW to, and converted by GTIE, were seen as a VW product, and retained the full VW warranty, in the same way that Ford and Cosworth worked together as one.
Gets some pics up on here, as its possible that it may be a known car
Either way, GTIE or not, it sounds interesting.

Edit, VW Heritage in Germany offer a service where if you supply them with the cars VIN number (anyone got the link) they can give you a certificate that tells you exactly what specification requests were made, this should include and mods done by the likes GTIE if the car was ordered through them from new.
