GTD ordered
« on: 28 November 2014, 04:13 »
Hi, another Aberdeenshire person here. Just ordered a 3dr manual GTD. Spec -

Limestone grey metallic
Discovery sat nav
Winter pack

I am a reformed track racer and I cannot get my head around the sound and sport pack benefits. Artificial engine and exhaust noise through the speakers? Willing to hear about the benefits though.

Anyway, it will join an up! On the driveway ;)

You get artificial engine noise through the speakers as standard. The main advantage of the Sport and Sound pack is that you get a nicer sounding exhaust note externally too that isn't artificial.

Isn't there a speaker in the exhaust though too with the sport and sound pack?

That's the one. Have a search on here I posted some videos showing the sound (just in the garage but gives you an idea). Also posted some pics of the brake callipers you get with S&S.

My opinion is that the exhaust sounds better than an non S&S even with the noise generator switched off due to the exhaust being straight through (no rear box behind the bumper).

However, no performance difference? It is the previous track driver from the 80s 911 supersport era in me that asks all these questions. When cars had no ABS or power steering and my word, you had to stay sharp on the road and the track. The rewards were immense though but the wallet was very very light!

No, no power difference but VW don't describe it properly so anything is possible  The odd thing is, our GTD is a lot pokier than the demonstrator (no S&S) we took on a test drive, maybe the lack of rear box/straight through section?

80's 911? Nice  The GTD won't come close but it is a cracking daily driver, I like it a lot.

That does make sense about the lack of a rear box and I'll no doubt play around with it in some way. The 89 911 Supersport M491 had an ECU under the passenger seat which was early hexidecimal coded, it was so tweakable. No more than 231 bhp was possible but torque and fuel usage was the aim. I drove a 71 Volvo 1800ES at the time and even its Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection had settings. Those were the days! I am thinking of joining the 2016 Caterham Academy, might just surprise a few young bucks on the track! ;)

I wonder what a replacement S&S exhaust system costs a few years down the line when its all corroded to hell...

I guess nobody has found out yet, but I suspect ££££...
