Rear centre air vent
« on: 26 November 2014, 13:27 »
One of the kids has managed to knock off the little "handle" to divert the direction of the air vents in the rear. This is just a little clip on handle, clips onto one of the vanes by a small plastic piece at the back and the handle clipping over it.

Is there an easy way to get this back in place. I worked at it for ages last night and got the part clipped back on but it must not have clipped fully as it seems a lot looser than the one on the other vent.

I had exactly the same issue but asked for it to be fixed when I took it in for a service. They had to order in a new rear vent but they did it for free!! I think they said it must have been like that when I collected it

That sure was a good result for you. I was thinking of trying to convince them it just seems to have fallen off in my hand.

Same happened to one of my mk6 rear air vents a few weeks ago, broken by my kid. As you have found, it's not as simple as it first appears. I managed to get it clipped back on but it's not right, the vent doesn't shift from left to right properly.  If you can convince them to replace the unit under warranty I would.  I'm changing over to a mk7 R next year so might just leave mine broken now.

These vent handles are very poorly made, second issue I've had with mine, sounds like the mk7 ones are no better   alternative is to banish the kids from the car

I have had the exact same issue. I just gave up and left it now. Seems that they are of poor quality for them to come off so easily. I am not exactly sure of what happened to mine, but one day when cleaning it, I seen the little "handle" thing on the floor.

They can snap off very easily. The best way I imagine to repair would be to get to the inside of the vent but that doesn't look overly straightforward.

Same happened with my last X5 and also was a mega pain to sort. Need to ban the kids from crossing over to the other side in the back or having any school bags in there.

Anyone had any luck fixing this? My Son has problems doing what he's told, and despite repeated warnings not to kick it, or climb over the arm rest, he's managed to knock one of them off. Looks like a totally sealed unit so very difficult to get to.

ETA After nearly half an hour, armed with two pairs of tweezers and half a dozen chopsticks, I was ready to give up, when at last it clicked into place! I've no idea how, definitely luck more than anything. Such a cheap flimsy part to have where people can accidentally catch it with their feet.
