Strange VW UK have not heard of ignition switch issues that showed the same symptoms on quite a number of cars in Germany, where VW has authorised their replacement.

They wanna change the complete steering rack?? Suppose that includes the igntion switch as it's mounted on the steering column (at least was there on previous models).

Good luck, hope they'll sort it soon....

Is the column part of the rack assembly? Changing the steering rack relatively simple... changing the column, significantly more effort...

Todays report

Morning Doug,

We do indeed have some progress but not in the direction we were heading last week!

On completing the wiring checks as agreed with technical department it would appear the conversation our tech had with them last week has resulted in them further investigating within the Volkswagen group the suggestion you emailed from the internet of the ignition switch being the issue.

Technical team have clearly found similar issues and have advised us there has been an isolated case with a Skoda model with identical symptoms so they have now advised us to change ignition switch.
We have indeed ordered replacement ignition switch but this has to come from Germany so unfortunately we do not have a delivery date as yet.

I suggest we monitor delivery schedule of the switch during this week and decide before the end of the week if you want to stay in our Golf demonstrator loan vehicle or indeed want to use your GTi since the effects of the lights coming on create no running problems?

We will be monitoring supply of the switch daily and update you of any change in position.

This does look like to most positive outcome to this needle in haystack we've all been frustrated with.

had a 63 reg Golf in for service today and the customer mentioned an intermittent stop/start error when turning on ignition, checked the faults and found a couple for steering angle sensor low voltage so sent him off to the dealers with the suggestion of a faulty ignition switch... wonder how many more i'll see!

Wondered if this ignition switch problem is with both 'keyless' and 'key' cars?

block exemption allows us to service them and keep the warranty intact, we don't get involved with manufacturer warranty work though. 3rd party warranties we deal with all the time.

Sounds like my mk7 gtd, only had it for 3 mths and been back to the dealers 4 times with the same fault codes appearing. The wife let the dealership pick the car up on Friday and fobbed her of with some golf/Tiguan thing,
My gtd is dsg and the hire thing is manual, she has dsg due to back problems.
now waiting to hear back from cust services regarding a gtd dsg as a minimum courtesy car or they swap the car for a new one as the supposed parts won't be in till after Xmas,
