Mk5 Heater Problems
« on: 24 November 2014, 10:00 »
Hi, can anyone help with some heater problems - its a Mk5 (2.0 GT FSI) with dual zone climate control.

My wife said it didn't feel as hot recently, but I've just experienced this today trying to warm it up on the first frosty morning. It was hardly generating any heat at all, and when I tried some of the different fan positions, it was barely blowing any air through the front dash vents - only seems to do windscreen or footwell.

I've read various posts about issues with the flaps sticking, and it may be possible to get to these behind the dash - if so, how can they actually be freed up?  Does this all sound like one problem, or is the lack of heat likely to be a thermostat issue as well?

Any help much appreciated!

First thing, a generic response to faults - try to get a fault scan. Long shot but may reveal what's up.

I'm pretty sure the vents in the centre of the dash and to the sides can just be removed fairly easily, and if you can work some yoga you can get a look under the dash by sticking your head down into the foot well.

If the air still blows out hot on the windscreen, you can rule out any engine side components not working, but I'd fully test that with the engine nice and hot to make sure the hot coolant is definitely allowed to flow around the heating system.

Sorry I can't help much more than that.
