Radiator fan on my 16v

The radiator fan on my Golf will not switch off even though the car is off! so what I am currently doing is taking the fuse out so that it switches off. I am also putting the fuse back in when Im driving the car and the fan comes on straight away.

can someone please tell me what they think the problem is and how i can sort this out?

if i need a part please tell how i can fit the part.

Sounds like you need a new thermostat. If you stand at the front of the car and look down at the radiator the thermostat is the bit thats screwed into the bottom right hand side of the radiator. It just srews out with a spanner. You can order 1 from VW or other spare suppliers such as German and Swedish or you could order a better one like this.

thermostat? thats at the water pump on a 16v

is the fan on constantly? from cold starts even in the morning?

normally, if the car is starting to overheat, the fan will engage. the fan will continue to run on, even with the ignition turned off, until the water temp drops below a certain temp

OOps i stand corrected. 

Whats the bit im thinking of then? or have i imagined it?

you mean the actual fan switch itself?

as soon as i put the fan fuse in and start the car the fan kicks in [even though its been left over night]. the fan will not switch off even though the keys have been removed from the ignition. hence the only way to switch the fan off is to remove the fuse.

i dont think its the thermo as the fan just kicks in without sensing a temp rise? could it be a relay as i noticed that there is, what looks like a relay, a relay unit and wiring connected to the fan?

Either the rad fan switch on the radiator, or the after run control unit if you have one.  The rad fan switch has a permanent live feed too.

Its in the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side.
