Driveshaft, Diff Or Something Else???????
« on: 13 September 2005, 20:03 »
Slowly getting there in my quest to rid the car of problems.............

Had the tracking done yesterday, it was well out so good job I got it sorted. It seemed to cure some of the knocking noises I was getting when going round corners, but now I have a new noise!

Basically, when turning right (even slightly), I get a vibration noise which gets worse the more I turn. Feels like its coming from the passenger side wheel. On full lock, still getting the knocking/clicking noise. In a straight line, there does seem to be a slight vibration, but that might be the exhaust vibrating through the floor (full stainless not quite seated right).

Had it looked at today by a couple of places, but they couldn't see anything obvious, apart from the passenger side driveshaft. This could be moved in and out slightly- not sure if they are supposed to do that? One of the guys that looked at it mumbled something about the diff, which got me worrying.........

Anybody got any ideas, based on their own experiences? Fingers crossed, this is the last problem that needs sorting for the moment........................ :undecided: :undecided:

if only a single driveshaft can be moved then its def not the diff. If its knocking when turning then its sounding more like the CV joint needs replacing. Easy enough job but very disconcerting when driving along.

Getting it checked out again tomorrow hopefully (third garage to look at it!), hopefully this guy will come up with an answer for me. If that fails, have to employ my dad at the weekend - have a look inside the gaiters and see what's going on..........I just worried as I had heard that Mk2 diffs break, but haven't got a clue as to what a dodgy one sounds like (I'm not much of a mechanic tbh)

Yes i can agree, when the rivets on the mk2 dif go they go big style and blow the gearbox apart! Sounds more like the CV joint to me.

check the bolts on the mounting bracket for the gearbox. - the bit that actually bolts on the gearbox
there is two bolts - if these are put in back to front the bolt ends rub against the chassis leg giving the vibration - ive had this prob on both my 16v's

if the diff has gone (and didnt split the casing) then it will lock as the shards of metal rivet get stuck in diff gearing - and wont move anywhere - even in neutral! - so the fact that its driving rules that out

Have to investigate that one at the weekend. Got a mechanic to sit in the car with me while I drove up the road - no strange sounds whatsoever? That's just typical really! Gonna check that the gaiters have plenty of grease in them too, hopefully I can solve this one fairly cheaply..........................
