My honest advice is to not bother, it sounds like a bit of a problem child so best off saving and buying a better condition car.

However, brake light could just need a fault scanner to reset the warning message. The window would involve removing the door skin which isn't a hard just, but loads of bolts of different sizes so requires careful attention to detail. The boot not opening could be a fault mechanism/badge so could possibly need swapping (again, a fault code reading via VCDS for example would show this up). Swapping the rear badge for a whole new unit is more of a pain as the boot trim likes to snap it's clips when you remove it.

Most of those jobs are home mechanic level but as I said at the start, few quid more nets you a car with less problems.

As I said, get a proper VW diagnostics carried out before anything if you can, as I'd advise against doing the expensive options first. You can pick up generic fault readers for as little as £30, I recently bought a VAG specific one (Foxwell NT500 for £120) and now I can just plug into my car and see exactly what's wrong with any electric system.

Have you bought the mk5 yet, or still thinking about it?

Because of the faults i did a straight swap for my mk4 so i have the mk5 now i wanted to get the abs thing done 1st then fix the window issue which i think the cable has broken and then onto the boot when i try to open the boot from out side i dont hear the mechanism noise

also how to i find out if the car is belt or chain driven

It's a belt.

Golf MK5 was of the era with ABS pump issues but we would need a code read to confirm.

I wouldn't personally go for it basing it purely on the fact that the MK4 and MK3 lower engines were all sh!t.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

is it the brake pad warning light or the ABS warning light?

Electrical issues with anything in the tailgate are usually down to a broken wire where the loom enters the tailgate from the c-pillar in the rubber boot. If its gone brittle though might be better off replacing the harness (i've done dozens of these on early mk5s). Could be the microswitch for the boot release, you need vagcom and a multimeter to diagnose properly.
