Fitting a DTUK FSR to a mk7 GTI
« on: 18 November 2014, 16:58 »
Hi,

I'm on the brink of ordering one of these boxes from DTUK, provided I can persuade myself I can install the thing despite being a complete numpty when it comes to cars.

Having downloaded the instructions and had a look under the bonnet it all seems pretty easy other than locating plug 'B'. The PDF doesn't really have a very clear photo of this plug, and it shows the car from below while it's on a lift but says this isn't really necessary and you can get to it from above.

I'll call DTUK for some support (when it's light again) and see what they say, but I was wondering if anyone on the forum who has installed one can can give any advice/photos too, please?

Thanks,
Andy

Id say you'll really struggle to get the bottom plug from the top....if not impossible. Going from under the car is the way to go.

Hi
I have 1 of these and you will nedd to jack the car up or use a ramp. The under tray has to come off and then find and connect the plug. Its fiddly and a pain. Once you know how to its not so bad though.
GTI PP,CSG, dsg, DCC, keyless, park assist 19"Santiagos.
Climate windscreen, Nav.

Golf R on order. 5dr dsg, 19", keyless.
Passat Estate Biturbo Black, on order.

I managed to fit one to a friends car from the top, it's fiddly and uncomfortable but doable!
I fitted it and removed it again when the car went.
It's much easier if there is two of you, one to release the plug and one to pull the clip.

So I have a redundant FSR at my disposal and can help you fit it if it's of any interest?!!

Have a look at this mate

That's great, thanks for that. Combined with the manual from DTUK I think I can tell where the plug is now. I'd prefer to connect it without having to jack the car up and remove the panel underneath but I guess we'll have to see if I can reach the thing.

Thanks for the offer, Exonian. If you're down in Exeter(do I remember that right?) that might be a bit of a trek but if I can't sort it myself this weekend I may take you up on it. Cheers

I know people have done it without but honestly its a 5 min job removing the sump protector. If u don't have very skinny arms/hands you are going to struggle. I can remove/install the whole kit in 10 mins as long as I have a trolley jack.

Success!

Put the car on the jack to do it in the end, as I was a bit worried I might get something unplugged at the limit of my reach from above and then not be able to get it connected correctly again.

So far, so good. Car runs fine, but the full review will have to wait for a week or two - the box isn't on my insurance until next weekend so I've had to take it back out and put the blanking plug in on the end of the wiring harness for this week.

I have also installed the pedal box (since that's not insurance-impacting) and I have to say I'm impressed. Even without the FSR in the car is really different to drive now; much much perkier.

I'll post some thoughts back in a couple of weeks once I've gotten used to the pedal box and had the FSR in too.
