Unfortunately that is one of the downsides of modern cars. They are all computer driven and very difficult for the layman or home mechanic to do much about when they go wrong. Long gone are the days of messing with distributor caps and points etc.
I think this is where stuff like VCDS pays dividends, not just for the obvious coding tweaks, but for fault codes and real world descriptions of what exactly has gone wrong. At least it gives you a good idea of what's wrong which can then be passed onto to recovery, indi garage or dealership.
