16v Gti breakdown
« on: 06 November 2014, 10:22 »
Having been Golfless for a while Ive recently bought a 16V off Ebay, and I picked it up last week. Nice 60 mile or so journey home to familiarise myself with the new car. Sadly, it broke down within about  3 miles if collecting it!

Pulled on to the motorway and while in the outside lane at about 80 I felt it die. Coasted to the hard shoulder and tried starting it, which it did eventually but it wouldnt idle and would only run at about 3000 rpm for a few seconds and then cut out.

Recovery man came after about a 45 min wait, and obviously it started instantly and ran no problem at all. However, with him following me it cut out again after about another mile. Swapped coil pack over and off we went, only for it to do it again, and now its not starting at all. No spark from the coil pack, new or old.

Car recovered home, and the other day I swapped over the crank position sensor for a new one. Still no joy.  Turns over but no spark. Fuel pump is running, rev counter not pulsing as the engine turns.

Any ideas? ECU relay has been suggested, and Im thinking dizzy as well? Dizzies seem to be difficult to get hold of for the ABF as well, without paying a fortune at any rate!

Scan it for codes.U281 on ebay is around a tenner and will pay for its self time and time again, new crank sensor may be dodgy, ecu relay 30 is a possibility, you should always carry a spare 30 and a fuel pump relay 167 as they are a common fail on these

Should have said, no codes present. I'll have a look at the relays later on, thanks.

I have changed it for a new one!

What's the best way of testing it? Code reader isn't picking anything up.
