Winter tyres?

Hi all,

I've been debating what to do about the crappy bridgestones.  I was going to bite the bullet and change the fronts for Conti sport 5s.  I'm now thinking to change to winters for the extra wet/cold weather performance and stick with the bridgestones for summer.  I've only done 3,500 miles and I'm a tight Yorkshireman   In the dry I have no issues with the bridgestones, they just go to pot in the damp/cold/wet.

Any thoughts?

Saw these from Camskll which seem a good deal.  I assume it's no issue with the XL type if I'm changing all four?

If you are going to get winter tyres you should also get a different set of rims rather than have the tyres changed twice a year with likely damage to your rims.

Suggest a quality supplier like mrwinterwheels who supply rims made in Germany not China and also supply quality winter tyres - linky

GTi PP will require 18" wheels to clear the larger front disc size.

I've already got refurbed genuine GTi wheels + Conti and Vredestein tyres sorted.
Just waiting for temps to fall...

I'm going for Audi Speedline wheels... 16" with 205 55 16 tyres (just fit on my 2.0 TDI estate).

They should look quite nice I hope, will only fit them in December before I go to Austria for Christmas.

Just a quick one on this, and something I tried last week which has made a big difference... Reduce the tyre pressures on the Bridgestones to 27psi all round. Less wheelspin, better turn-in, even comfier ride and somehow more steering feel.

I've actually got a full set of Michelin Pilot Alpin winters which are being fitted this weekend, can't wait to see what difference they make!

17inch wheels clear the pp calipers perfectly - I run 17 inchers on mine without problems
