Car has warranty and dealer wants £ for fuel pump
« on: 26 October 2014, 14:00 »
Hello all!

I booked my MK6 GTi in with my local VW dealer (car is under extended warranty) for a DSG diagnostic (kangeroo'ing a lot, also loses power when I put pedal to metal)..

They've come back saying it needs a DSG oil change (had this 6k miles ago at 40k)..

However, this is the weird part.. They're also saying the 'high pressure fuel pump' needs changing and its not covered under my warranty 'apparently'. They want £350 incl. parts and labour.

What would you do? Surely it should be covered - doesn't state fuel pumps aren't in my warranty policy.

Thanks for you time :)

I would say it should be covered without a doubt, it shouldn't be worn out by now.

The extended warrantiy market is a bit of a minefield, although you'd hope an extended VW warranty would be a quality product.

If your extended warranty was bought at the time the car was ordered / built, you've got the Extended Factory Warranty and the level of cover should be the same as the 3 year warranty from date of first registration and it should definitely cover your fuel pump.

If your warranty was bought later, then the extent of cover provided will depend on which of the VW warranties you've got, and the 'small print' might mean you've not got the protection you thought you had, or it gives VW a way out so they don't have to pay!

Reading the extended warranty info. at the above link;
- depending on what your excess is, you may be contributing up to £250 of the cost of any covered parts.
- the Driveline warranty doesn't cover the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp).
- the Comprehensive and Named Component warranties do cover the hpfp, but for the warranty cover to apply, the part needs to have suffered 'sudden mechanical or electrical failure'.
- if failure is due to normal wear and tear - gradual deterioration caused by the effects of age and/or mileage - then there's no cover.

I'd ask the dealer to explain to you why the part isn't covered under the extended warranty. I bet they'll use the 'wear and tear' argument! I wouldn't have thought it would have worn out yet though.

Read the T&Cs of the warranty. Did you get car from VW dealer? Who is the warranty underwritten by?

Thank you all for your comments!

After a couple of calls with VW Customer Care and the VW Dealer, it then came clear that apparently there was a 'typo' at the dealers end which made the warranty claim void. They have now agreed to pay for everything.

My guessing that it was VW direct doing some ass kicking.

Good result - always a stress point when they suddenly land a large bill for you to agree to
