One year old and 41000 miles
« on: 26 October 2014, 07:21 »
After one year and 41000 mile sI though I would write a few points, if anyone is interested in reading it

Good
Economy, Comfort, Performance, Looks nice still, Build quality, Dynaudio is excellent, DSG/Auto shift is smooth, Handles very tidily

Not so good
Paint quality of oryx, lots of stone chips and a complete waste of money at £1000, looks virtually no different than solid white unless it is under bright lights.
DSG, in manual why does it kick down when I do not want it too, horrendously annoying in a diesel at it will often kick down into a lower gear that is then almost immediately on its red line, which almost kills the acceleration.
Discover Pro , very glitchy and the idiotic locking up every time the map is on at the A45 turn of the Brum Airport is daft.
Suspension Bushes, front lower and upper already changed, and still creaks come from it...
The rear door hard scratchy plastic tops made to look like the soft touch front door, really irritates me

Overall
Love the car, would definitely have another, not in Oryx, and would not chose the DCC option. DCC does work but I tend to just leave in sport 99% of the time, comfort is used only when I have my mum in the back  Also this is probably why I have the bushes changed twice on the suspension. Hopefully the 4x4 option and the 230BHP diesel option from the new Passatt might be available when I choose my next one.

I have also owned my GTI for over 1 year now.  I would agree with all the points which are stated as good.  However from my personal experience I would disagree with the point about Oryx White being a waste of money and requiring bright light to see it shimmer.  41000 miles is a lot for one year so I would expect you to see a lot more wear and tear than most of us on this forum, including stone chips etc,.  I would agree the paint is soft and does chip very easily.  But for Oryx to shimmer it is actually best viewed in softer dull/hazy sunlight, not actaully full on bright sunlight.  £1000 is a lot of money for Oryx White, but when it does it's thing it is well worth the money.  I will be getting it again on my next VW.

As I have written on this forum a few times Oryx is infact Pure White with a lacquer and coating added to make it shimmer.  If you don't believe me buy a spray can of Oryx, this is what you get.

My Discover Pro is also not glitchy in the slightest.  It has been solid since I bought the car.

Apart from the points listed above I would agree with your in depth review.  Interesting to read about DCC not being all that in your personal experience.  I thought about getting DCC when I bought my GTI but decided against it, however I was thinking I might get it on my next car.  Is DCC really a bit of a waste of money if you prefer or are used to a firmer ride?

Overall a great read, always good to see others opinions.  41000 miles is more than a lifetime for my cars.

DCC does definitely work, but the added hassle of the bush problems I amanita sure whether it is worth it. I would imagine from previous experience of other cars that the "firm ride" is more pliant than the standard hard riddle, but definitely I would think twice. I also haver the ACC which is great with the auto box, as in traffic i just leave it on and the car starts and stops itself, which is great when you are stuck in a tailback on the motorway or town driving

With or without dcc the suspension bushes may have required changing anyway. You can't just blame DCC! I've also had no problems with my nav pro but I suspect most people near a major airport will suffer the same locking.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

Interesting to read your review and some valid points made. I have a GTI so can't comment on some of the points, however I have a different opinion on DCC. It would be the very first option box I tick and feel it gives the car an incredible depth of ability. Mine stays in Comfort most of the time thanks to the quality of the roads round my way, and even on motorways I feel it really does ride as well as a much larger car. The calibration work VW have done is simply incredible.

Yes, I do use Sport quite a bit, but my favourite setting is to have Individual with everything set to Sport other than DCC which stays in Comfort.

Interesting review.

Again I love the DCC, and I would deffo spec it next time.  I've had my GTI a year, and it's just passed 22k miles.  Just out of curiosity when did you have your bushes done?
Just wondering if I will have the same problem.  I've not noticed at creeks yet.

Odd about the Discover Nav.  I go down that area of the 45 all the time to the M42.  Think I might go down a little further and see if i get the same lock up in the same location.  Generally I find it pretty good, although sometimes it jerks a little if I'm changing screens.

Only problem I've had with mine so far is when I took it in for a service last week, they had to replace the water pump as they said it was cracked.  Took a week as they ordered the wrong part!  I was not impressed!

However one thing I will also agree with is the fact that I would definitely be happy to own a golf GTI again for sure.  It's truely impressed me with it's power, handling, build quality and refinement and just general driving pleasure.

blimey 41k??

mines coming up to nearly a year old and I have done 7700 miles!!

unsurprisingly nothing is feeling old or worn, still feels as tight and well put otgther as the day I first sat inside it

bottom line is when the 3 years are up and will be walking straight to a new one

I would order the dynaudio again, same with the Performance pack, change the colour to carbon and get 5 doors..maybe get the 19's or hope they offer a choice of 18's when I come to change

or better still have an anniversary edition available

for me its a perfect all rounder.

I would also go for DCC again.... usually in comfort setting for the suspension (thou the M42 ain't as bad anymore as it used to be). Another thing I would not go without is ACC, though it sometimes does require some manual input.... Happy I did not go for Discover Pro, the smaller one is sufficient (despite serious restriction and that it is outperformed by a cheap 29£ sat nav app on my android phone).

Wish I had gone for dyn audio thou.... low frequencies distort a bit a higher volumes.

And as for mileage.... 7k miles a year, you need a car for that? :D
Am nearly on 44k miles after 12.5 months :D
