Changing OEM HID bulbs
« on: 24 October 2014, 21:29 »
Has anyone changed OEM HID bulbs on their Golf? If so how did you go about it please?
VW dealer will only change bulbs supplied by them and I want to fit non OEM bulbs.

I haven't but was looking at it as well. When I called the dealer for the bulb part number they were useless and said it was the full light unit that would need changing.

I've bought a pair of 6K D3S bulbs and am just plucking up the courage to change them - it's a bumper off job by the looks of it as you can't get the panels off the inside of the headlights.

I'll take some pictures when I do it!

Gnasher, please keep us updated. I looked at powerbulbs and autobulbs and see that Osram do a HID upgrade for about £70 per bulb, but VW dealer will not fit. I am keen to try them and see how good (or bad) they are, but not sure how to fit.

Well I changed them - took photos but can't put them on as I'm in work.

It's not that hard - you can get away without taking the bumper off (just) and once you've got the headlight out it's a piece of cake to do.

I used a cheap set of 6000K D3S bulbs (£25) just to check it's possible and the projected light from them is a very close match to the LED foglights (which was my aim).
