New starter slow crank

Hi all
I,ve just put a new starter motor in to my 16 valve golf, cleaned up all the earths charged the battery, brought a new battery but always the same a very slow turnover. It feels like it wants to start but the power goes out of the battery, then the starter make a clicking sound. I took out the spark plugs and it turns over fine.
The reason I brought a new starter was that I broke the live feed connecter to the starter when cleaning up the earths.
I,ve had the golf for about 10 years and the old starter was alway slow but it aways would start. Also there has never been a connection to the cold start valve since I have owned the car.
If any one can help it would be appreciated as I have run out of ideas.

The starter isn't getting the full 12v. And by the sounds of it, nor was the old one. I would say you have a loose connection between the battery and motor. All the wires good? Battery terminals on nice and tight etc

Thats what it feels like but all the connections are tight and clean.
Before i broke the old starter it was cranking fast after I cleaned the earths. It feels like the starter is not man enough for the job but I,m sure its the right one.
Ive got the battery on charge for the night for another try tomorrow !

Get the thickest piece  of wire you can find and bridge the battery positive straight to the starter and report back.

Did all the usual checks but still no joy    so decided it must be a faulty starter, so then I took it out and thought I better check the spigot in the bell housing , it turned out that there wasn't one in there, I put a new one in and put the starter back in, now the car starts like never before   That ten years I had a lazy starter it always used to start so thats why I never bothered to sort it out .

excuse my ignorance, but what is a spigot and why would it cause a slow crank? Im just about to change my starter motor as it is lazy and want to check my spigot first, how do i do it?
