Remove the TB and clean it, in situ you can't get to all of it.... get a new paper seal for it from dealer before taking it off though.
If it runs at 1400 and/or idle is not stable you'll need to do TBA ;)

Been a while since I owned a mk3 :D
Fuel rail is not connected to TB and does not need to come out afaik or iirc..... i.e. not required to depressurise.
But if you want to all you need to do is unplug fuel pump relay and start engine. That will depressurise in a second.

Decided not to attack the TB today after thoroughly reading all 43 pages of this amazing and exhaustive thread:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=2080.0

instead i went for the CPS, which went to the top of my list after reading that mammoth thread.

this is what i found:

admittedly i caused a lot of the damage you see, but none the less it just goes to show how old and brittle this part has become. It could also be the original factory part, Siemens branding. now to find the replacement...

Yeh I looked up OEM&M already .  There's lots out there to choose from, ranging quite considerably in price (and also quality I'm sure!); Anywhere from £20 up to £80.
I've spotted a good price on a 'Topran' sensor, and a pretty reasonable price on a 'HAAS' one too.

Budget is very much a consideration, the purse strings are pulled very tight at the moment
