It doesn't have to be a compromise on the Golf - yes the 5 door costs more, but it'll be worth £600 more at trade-in time, so it's money set aside rather than money lost if you're buying outright, and if you're doing a lease or solutions, you should find your monthly payment about the same for both 3 door and 5 door.
You need to ask yourself how often you will have someone use those seats, if it's once in a blue moon then get the 3 door, more than once a week and your rear seat passengers will get tired of climbing in rather than stepping into your car.
