Temperature gauge question?

Sorry if this has been answered in another post, but here goes....

My temperature gauge seems to be really slow to move to a higher temperature, for example, I was driving for around 25 mins on the A3 at >= 70 mph and it didn't even hit 90...and it just seems to move really slowly in general.

Another thing I have noticed tonight is that I am not getting any hot air through the blowers??

I have read things like it could be the temperature sensor or thermostat? Any advice guys? This might also be related to the intermittent start problem I've been having? (separate thread)

temp issue is most likely thermostat (99%).... they are very prone to fail over time, mk4 is right age now for about all of the original ones to have failed. temp sensor normally has different failure mode.

starting issue won't be thermostat though.

okay thanks, what about the no hot air through the vents, is that going to be the thermostat as well?

If your thermostat is stuck open the engine is overcooled; the heating runs off the engines inner coolant circuit. So if engine does not get up to temp the air for heating won't get as hot as it would with correct engine temp.

Replace thermostat and while you're at it flush through the heater matrix, if you then still have heating issues  look into the hot/cold air flaps.

Try ebay... part number is 050121113C (for 1.8t or 2.0 petrol engines)

Vernet "calorstat" thermostats are very good (I used them in the past; they seem to last better than many other ones out there).
