Brake Pad Advice for GTI calipers
« on: 09 October 2014, 18:17 »
Hi guys,

I've acquired some GTI brakes for my 1.9tdi daily, now that the hub swap is done and struts, I've had the discs very lightly low pressure sandblasted to remove rust etc, so they look and feel new. My mechanic is asking for pads.

My question is on a Stage 2 1.9tdi making 155bhp and 370nm torque, what kind of pads do I need? I don't track, it's my daily driver to and from uni but I need something that can take a spirited drive at night. I was looking at EBC Red stuff, £68 so not to expensive.

People give bad reviews about these saying they wouldn't run them, but with no real explanation, EBC have a new compound in them saying they work from cold and deliver great braking, either those or EBC ultimax, which are half the price which say they outperform OEM but thats it.

I like the idea of low dust, and the extra bite especially when pressing on.

Thought i'd run it past you guys before buying anything!

Thanks

Hey
I have the GT 170bhp diesel & I'm running the OEM 312 disc's, they stop fine when I have needed them.

The disc's & pads last for ages, they were on at 24k & now reaching 70% wear at 72k
I've never pushed my car anyway near it's max though

p.s nice torque figures, that's better than mine

There are a lot of ebc haters who can never explain why, I run ebc on my own car and sell them to a few racers (hot hatch, VW cup etc who won't use anything else).

Red stuff if you do push on or quality aftermarkets (like the ultimax), although I'd go for ferodo premier over them (o.e suppliers to Mercedes AMG)

The things I've read across other forums is that EBC pads tend to wear very fast and don't always live up to expectation on track. That being said, if you have no desire to push it to the max then this may not be a problem.

As mentioned above, a set of Ferodo pads would be a really good bet, I use a set of standard Ferodo pads (supplied through the above!) and they've been really good on a 265bhp Golf GTI.
