Radar interference
« on: 06 October 2014, 11:07 »
I've had over the past few months several very odd emergency braking events.

All of them concerning passing other vehicles either stationary in another lane on the motorway (as I filter off) or in the process of parking at the side of the road (which I am nowhere near hitting).

The emergency braking kicks in and slams on my anchors.

I'm starting to wonder if the events are caused by other radar based systems on BMW's - each time it seems to be a BMW involved.

Anyone else seem similar or had any thoughts about this?

Its probably only a matter of time before this causes an accident in its own right!

Could just be that BMWs fill the gap in front of you more readily than any other marque. They do seem to occupy gaps that aren't there.

Ive had several "warnings" with the red symbol on the dash with the audible warning...usually when a car is turning left in front and im not slowing down enough for the cars liking.

Ive had one "brakes on" situation when passing a parked bus on the left and a car in the middle of the road turning right....although the gap was narrow there was plenty of space really.

maybe my Golf's advanced electronics can read BMW badges and think "jeez, look at that d*ck" and help me avoid them :D

No, its definitely not that.... its also not the same problem as the other sorts that Kenny describes - the vehicles turning off well clear of you - that does happen too of course!

For someone turning left ahead, I usually just tickle the brake to let the car know I'm aware and have it covered, rather than it assume otherwise and bang on the brakes for you.

Exactly the conclusion id come to.....also moving the steering wheel or letting off the throttle appears to prevent it usually as well.

Too funny!

Oryx R - nice. The ACC was never going to kick in at less than 19mph, even if the sensor could pick that bucket up.

I thought the city braking would have caught it - which should be 0-30mph.

There's an awful lot to do with understanding the radar based systems on the golf which are not explained in detail - probably because they don't want to tell you what to expect other than "it might save you" (but don't blame us if it doesn't)
