Engine coolant temperature low

Today is the first day I noticed my engine coolant temperature gauge only getting up to a maximum of 80°C. Even after a good 40 minute motorway run. I also observed below par fuel consumption, even whilst hyper-milling.

For the 11 months of ownership, without fail, the engine quickly reached 90°C within minutes of the journey.

I've checked engine coolant level and it's right where it should be. Car had its first service end of July.

Is there anything to be concerned about?

Either sensor not working correctly or the thermostat has packed in.

Within 3 months of new ownership of my Mk6 Git, my coolant light was activated.

I took it to the dealer who acknowledged that there was a known issue with the water pump and replaced free of charge/under warranty. I would have thought that this known issue would have been sorted for the Mk7...................hmm...!

Unlikely to be a water pump problem as Hawaii-Five-O's coolant temperature is lower than expected. I'd expect the opposite with a water pump issue... unless all the water had leaked out in which case the temperature sender can read lower (because there's no coolant)...

I suspect this could be down to the thermostat, as stated above... If it has failed open, then it will take a long time for the car to get up to the normal running temperature, if it ever did...

Thanks for the feedback chaps.

Sounding like a defective sensor in the coolant chamber (can see wiring going into the top of it). Reluctant call to dealers imminent me thinks :(

Been monitoring the coolant temperature gauge all week, on my daily commutes, and it's still dicky. Fluctuating between 70ºC - 90ºC which is obviously disconcerting.

Could this be effecting my fuel economy? I've noticed a decrease since it started playing up (but could be coincidental since the weather turned cooler this week).

It could be, H50, if the ECU is taking the temperature from the same sensor as the gauge...

Car booked in for Friday to look at Coolant Temperature gauge/sensor fault. Will update on what happens.

Seems both DougL and I are suffering with the same fault. Be interesting to see if it's common or not.

Mine is booked in on Thursday. Definitely suffering decreased fuel economy.

The engine is probably running richer because the ecu thinks the water temp is still low. That would explain the increased fuel consumption

True the ECU gets a feed from the ECT sensor, so you'll be running slightly rich.
