New to the golfs
« on: 03 October 2014, 18:05 »
Hi all,

My name is Henry and I'm from the N Wales / N Shropshire boarder, and I'm looking at getting a MK2 GTI

I have never owned a golf before but have driven a few, been to look at a lot with the view to buy but decided that I should focus my attention on my 4x4 comp trucks. However they have gone, I have a spare slot garage and I guess that it's doing nothing in the bank so I might as well invest it into something that I can have some fun with, and maybe make a bit along the way.

So I'm after a nice origional 3dr, small bumper in red with a decent factor spec and lots of history, and in as good condition as I can get! I have only ever driven 8v engines so have no experience with the 16v. I know of the usual rust spots and interior look outs but is there anything else to look out for?

I've been having a look on the web for the last few weeks and everything that looks to he what I'm after seems to sell before I can even get there to have a look

I look forward to hearing from you all, I'm off to have a mooch in

Henry

By on shell condition first.
Chassis legs, filler neck, window seats all the bits which have to be cut out not panels.
Secondly, good panels and trim are hard to get and match.
It can be done but can cost and take time.
Interior bits are getting rare but same as above.
Mechanical bits are easy to get and fix.
Lots of donor newer vws to rob.

Go for a KR 16v or ABF conversion over 8v if you can find a good one.

Thank you for the reply! Is the 16v more desirable than the 8v in general?

I have undertaken a lot of work in the past on my comp trucks, so that doesn't phase me but electrics are not my thing, I have read that the 16v can suffer from electrical injection issues?

139bhp in a ton of golf is a lot of fun.
Always look for a valver first but buy on condition as 8v engine can be swapped out in a day or two.
Kjet is an old system and dumb but the digi is just as weak these days

Maybe for an investment you could look to a g60, Syncro or even rallye all budget depending. If not then 16v will hold more value if original. What do you want the car for?

Valver being the 8v or 16? I want the car as an investment, budget is 3/4k but I want some thing that I can use. It will be garaged most of the time as I run other cars as well just come out for some fun on a nice day etc.

High spec wise?

PAS, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof? Did they ever do leather or just the vinyl trim?

Again thanks for your input! :)

A valver is the 16v. Gti spec is better but not all had electric windows, pas, electric mirrors ect. Recaro edition one seats are ones to have I think but the price of them reflects this. Chances are though any car you buy will not come with the original factory brochure so you wouldn't know was was fitted so if you wanted to upgrade the car you had to top spec including cruise control and air con you could do that and I think it could only raise the value.

Check out the buying guide. 16v is the one to get.

Most may not agree but the money is in big bumper models and the 16v is the icing on the cake. If you want something that will appreciate in value get a big bumper 16v in the best condition and lowest mileage you can.

Keep it mint/make it mint. Won't lose.

You will struggle to lose on a mk2 full stop ATM. Prices are going up rapidly. But I would agree, big bumper 16v is where it's at.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.
