1.8T sleeper
« on: 30 September 2014, 20:13 »
Completely out of interest (I would never get insured on a 1.8t at 21...) how close to a true sleeper can you get with the 20v lump in.

Things like big brakes are invisible anyway. Updated suspension isn't super obvious either. But what about things like exhaust? Do you need a loud updated one, or not?

Just interest really. I love the idea of a mk2 which properly takes off without looking like some scruffy chav has had his mitts on it.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Its a 16v not a 20 but you get the picture.
Its about how much money you have, say +10k to throw at a MK2 to get it stupid quick

Why not try the specialists insurers, I am sure they could help.

I have spoken to them before, and non of them would even cover me. However come next renewal (Jan) I will be 21, so hopefully the age will open the options up a little. So we will see.

I had a quote off Adrian flux last month for £1080 a year on a mk2 scirocco 20vt with everything modded and all mods declared.
Things I did have is no commuting and low mileage of 3000 a year.
I do also own and run another car and also own and run a motorbike so that may have helped.
Could probs get cheaper quotes off of other insurers.

I'm 20 btw with only 1 year no claims and was rear ended last year which drove my premium up.

I'd say my 20vt is a bit of a sleeper, it still has the 8v badge on!  I am insured through Adrian flux, £350 for 3,000 miles a year including commuting, 29 years old.

Very nice. Just how I want mine. Although mine has a couple less doors than yours ;)

If I could insure it sub 1500 (about an 80% increase) I would be happy. I just don't see it happening. But come my 21st we will see!

True! But I can live with that I think...

Going back to my first post, what ehaust are you running? How loud is it? And what route did you go down with the engine management?

I spent ages researching what exhaust to get as I didn't want anything chavvy.  I settled on the jetex stainless steel resonated system.  At idle and slow speeds it's almost silent but at high revs it has a lovely deep note.  It's larger than the standard system but works great with the 1.8t

My car has DTA management, running 215 bhp.  In my opinion that is about the perfect amount of power without having an lsd fitted.  It's quite straight forward to get more power by going for a bigger turbo but I think you would need the lsd, which would add a fair whack to the bill.

I was lucky, I bought the whole conversion from a guy on my local forum who owned a specialist retro vw garage and can do these conversions in his sleep.  The end result is a super quick mk2 that can be used every day, and is reliable.

Cheers

Pedro
