i hope this is in the right place my applogies if not

i need some help please my car devloped a problem yesterday i noticed a flat spot around 3000 rpm and it felt under powerd i got home and plugged my hand held fault code reader in and it gave me a code of 00515 this refers to the cam shaft postion sensor now i did smell a bit of petrol when i got out the car but it sounds perfect and starts fine  now i dont really have time atm to be working on my car as me and the partner have just had a baby hes 11 days old now

so i rang a vw specalist thats just around the corner from me and told him of my problem and he said that its the cam chain tenshioner at the other end of the engine thats at fault and the timing is out he said its about £300 in parts and about the same in labour now ive read a few threds on the net and i can only think what he said is the worst case as ive seen people just cleaning the connectors or getting away with a new sensor

what do you guys think is this guy just trying to make a quick buck and rip me off

thanks for any help

  • No scammers please.
Try and change the sensor (only 2 screws holding it in), Mine had this fault and a new sensor fixed it. There cheap on ebay.

agreed, replace the sensor first, its under the timing belt cover (piece of plastic on the drivers side) its got a wire running off the main loom to it so you wont miss it
I think they are 8mm or 6mm bolts 2 of holding it in place
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)
