Golf R front foglights?
« on: 27 September 2014, 10:51 »
I'm sure this'll be quickly answered. I know the R has no individual front fogs, but are there any integrated into the main headlight units, either as dedicated fogs or perhaps the DRLs putting out more light than usual when fogs are selected? I'm not too bothered either way, I stick to the letter of the law when using them (visibility reduced to 100m), which means i've only had reason to put them on in the GTD once.

The lack of separate units on the R is probably the main reason for the front end is looking less sporty than the GTI/GTD, they've become synonymous with sporty models (even when they put them on special editions of 1.2 Corsas). Just asking fo curiosity's sake as I can't find any reference to them at all in the VW brochure online.

Apparently the good thing about xenon lights is that the cutoff on them is so good there is very little need for fogs - although the LED ones on the GTI do look cool, I've never really felt the need to use them yet (very little fog in Cyprus, you see!)

Yes, I do think the fogs on the GTI/GTD look better than the intakes on the R - they really add to the agressive look. I think that's the one thing that spoils the front of the R in terms of it not looking as sporty. Glad the R has the intakes that it does, My cousin has an S3 (only found that out yesterday, phoning him to tell him about the R), and the front grilles are so open on the S3 that a stone has gotten through and bust his intercooler - Audi say it is not a design fault and he'll have to pay up about £850 for a new one - he's getting some fine meshes made up to sit behind his grilles.

Maybe true I dont know but I was told they were worse as the whiter the light the more it reflects back in fog. I regular have fog up here in the hills and i agree with what i was told as my GTI with xenons suffers reflected light in fog and is worse in the fog than any of my other cars with non xenons.

I hope it's not all about the whiteness of the light as the LED fog lights are actually a whiter light than the xenons.

Can't, think you'd run the risk of overheating when pushing on, the air intakesare there for a reason methinks?

Retrofitting would be incredibly difficult but maybe possible. Not worth it though in my opinion.

Most air intakes/grills in the body work are purely for cosmetic looks (just look at the R400) and most of the time the size is greatly overexagerated. The car might run slightly hotter but I very much doubt you'd have any issues with overheating, especially in England where we have a very cool environment most of the year.

It is strange they didn't fit independent fogs on the R as the front styling really let's it down.
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

All gone.

My original reason for asking the question was because the MK4 GT TDI130 and GTI got fogs integrated into the headlamp units and thought that might be the same with the R. My dad bought a MK4 new from Carshock and it was a Maltese import (the only way he could get a TDI30 Auto in the hatchback rather than estate, it wasn't available in the UK). The Maltese spec didn't have the fogs.
