windscreen replacement anyone?!
« on: 19 September 2014, 15:24 »
Got a large chip on passenger side (4cm in diameter, radiating cracks, courtesy of a retard 4x4 owner who apparently must have driven straight from field onto motorway).

Have the heated front screen - Autoglass quoted over 1200£ for replacement (they have to get screen from VW)!!
I paid less than that for most of my cars!

Does anyone know how much VW would charge directly? Though Autoglass guy said that VW would also call them (makes you wonder what a VW garage can do).

Does the camera and other sensors need re-cal?

Why wouldn't you get glass replacement through insurance? It'll probably be £75 glass excess to pay. You will not lose any no claims discount making a glass claim.

Er - just do an insurance claim for windscreen damage??? Normally just pay a small excess.

I was hoping (with heated screen also) that if I ever needed a replacement it would have to a a VW one and hopefully will not cause sensor issues

I don't as such have to pay for it but will get moaned at by car admin and finance at my company.

They only take out third party, theft and fire - lease covers stonechips but not windscreen replacements.

Bet they regret that now!

Autoglass first told me that VW don't do heated front screens and had I not be adamant they would have fitted a normal one on Sunday... Took 3 hours for them to find out that VW actually do heated ones on the Golf

No point going through a dealer they will get Autoglass in to fit it.

I would have them moan at me and then pay the £1200 themselves rather than pay out of my own pocket to save the moaning. If you're driving a company car then they should cover it. Stone chips happen to glass and bodywork, if their insurance is inadequate then that's on the company and not the employee. The company sound pretty reckless to let you loose in a £25k + car and not even insure it fully comp. Would they expect you to chip in the replacement costs if you had a crash which wrote it off?

My sentiments. Give your company the middle finger tell them it's their problem for being cheap and procuring insufficient insurance cover.

Well, don't have to chip in at all. Our finance director is a bit like scrooge mc duck (aren't they all) so might moan and stop me from getting heating screen next time. They also don't get me winter tyres :D

Maybe they'll get glass cover from now on.... tbh for them writing off a 29k£ car isn't really a concern, few 100£ on insurance and some other stuff though is because it is regular cost or so they say (company turns over in excess of 100M£ p.a.).

I had mine replaced by autoglass  4 months ago.  Had a stone fly out of a trucks rear wheel and put and 10inch crack on the drivers side.  Cost me £150 through insurance and you wouldn't tell it's been replaced.

Itavaltalainen: I do have to ask, if you're prepared to unnecessarily write off £1200 that you can't be held responsible for - how much money are you on? Those boss moans must be epic in your place of work.
