Sat Nav and Traffic don't combine?!
« on: 17 September 2014, 16:21 »
Hi - is it the same for everyone that the built in traffic function doesnt combine with the Sat Nav when planning routes?

this seems a very strange decision and almost makes using the built in sat nav pointless if you have a tom tom with live traffic!

Thoughts?

Mine does look at traffic and change the route if there is traffic ahead, is that what you mean?

Can't say it's very good at telling you the details. I prefer a friends Volvo, where it tells you it would like to redirect you and offers you the new route and you can assess based on the time saving it suggests and your knowledge of the roads.

I also don't like how my standard Nav would rather direct me down a tiny lane (unsuitable for HGVs kind of thing) than let you sit for 10 minutes in some traffic on a nice A road. I haven't got round to updating though, so perhaps that will help!

yes that's what i mean - but it has never rerouted me when there is traffic, any idea if this is a setting?

How do you go about updating it?

Thanks a lot

Hmm, not sure if it's a setting or not, probably is - have a look in the Advanced setup from the Nav and see.

The update is done by unzipping the new version onto the SD Card and rebooting (turning the car on :))

It should automatically reroute when traffic details come through therefore you won't know as it will automatically do it.

Have to agree that its pretty poor - I have the Discovery Pro and its not a patch on my previous vehicle's in car nav unit (and that car was almost five years old when I got my Golf!)

It seems to not get all the TMC messages - my old system used to display hundreds at a time, yet this one just seems to have a handful. And no, its not because I'm not close enough - it tells me about problems on the M6 at Exeter when I'm in Grimsby!

I've not quite got to the point where I buy a TomTom, but almost...

That's not the nav pro's fault that tmc only shows a few. Tmc is updated so if it's not then how can you blame the nav pro??

I know TMC is universal, but for some reason it doesn't seem to have all of the messages.

At some point I'll do a direct comparison, when I've got time!

Just having a quick look, it seems in the UK there are two different providers for TMC messages, ITIS holdings and the RAC, whichever one VW have subscribed to might be the difference in what I'm seeing...

Quote
5  Service Providers
In the UK, two service providers – ITIS and Trafficmaster –
transmit traffic data via FM RDS-TMC to licensed receivers.
Both charge for the service, providing it in return for a single
fee per vehicle license.
ITIS utilises the national Classic FM RDS carrier and has a
special AS/1 license, while Trafficmaster uses regional
broadcast networks.
The UK structure is markedly different from that elsewhere
in Europe. Many European countries set up publicly-funded
services which give free access to traffic information. This
model has tended to change slightly in the recent past, with
many, but not all, of these services moving towards a more
commercial footing. The result has been an increase in
service quality. Some other countries, such as France and
Germany, have a ‘mixed economy’ of free and charged-for
services.

I thought the setting in the nav  for 'dynamic route guidance' (or similar) did change the route on the fly?

Problem with accepting the change is that it sometimes overestimates the problem.

The traffic announcements give the option for 'all' or 'route.

Sorry if that is obvious.
