I always managed to keep my Rising Blue Scirocco looking smart - it was a bit of a standout colour on the roads when 40% of the cars on the road seem to be white, and 50% of the remainder were a greyscale shade. Carbon Steel Grey and similar shades (like Audi Daytona grey) are my preferred area of the greyscale. My first Scirocco was a grey that got discontinued early on, not sure why, it was a great colour, had a strong purple hue about it.

Looking at the pics link, for me it has to be reflex silver (as long as it doesn't look bare/unpainted - some cars do) or Lapiz blue. I've had a few black pearl Polos and Golfs in the past, and they do look great if you don't mind washing the car every day (not as keen on washing the car more than once a week as I used to be).

I'll be steering clear of Tornado red if I get an R, it just doesn't seem like an R colour to me and i've been a bit shocked by the thickness (or lack of) of the paint - a strong metallic colour needs a thicker coat to achieve the colour opacity. Hopefully that means fewer paint chips that go down to the basecoat.

Still don't see the need to load up spec - keyless might be the only thing i'd think of adding, and that would be purely for the novelty.

Specced up an Audi Sportback S3 to minimum spec i'd want (about 2/3 of the standard spec on the R that is optional on the S3), and with a 10% discount on both, the R would be costing about £2800 (10%) less than the S3. It's a bit of a toss-up between the 2. 5 door R is externally nicer than the Sportback IMO, but the S3 interior is just the best you'll see on a car less than £50k, the R is reputed to be a slightly better drive, but will you only notice hooning around a track and driving it like you stole it, as the journos do. The Audi dealerships around me do seem to look you up and down to determine if you can afford their products or whether you're just "riff-raff". There's just one more thing to consider between the 2, it's obligatory to be a twit behind the wheel in the Audi and non-one will flash you out of a junction as karmic payback.

I think I might be swaying more to the R

Monkeyhanger are you going towards a manual or DSG. Also if I'm in 2 minds reflex silver R or Tr gti. As it's not a metallic what is the TR like does it look faded or do you have to keep it really clean to get it to shine.

I'm struggling to stay on top of my DPB its too much hard work.

MisterP: Not really a DSG person - if I did so, it would only be for the marginal 0-62 increase (which is only really true when you're using launch control?). I'd be more tempted in DSG if it brought you down a road tax band or gave you noticeable increase in mpg (1.1mpg on the combined, more like 0.7mpg around the doors is negligible for me). My dad has always gone with DSG, i've never liked them in use. It's a cheesy cliche, but I feel far less engaged when using a DSG and cruise control, and I always feel that there is no middle ground with DSG - put your foot down and it'll hold onto gears for far too long, and every other time it's shifting up far too early, even with moderate acceleration. I'm sure plenty  of DSGers will strongly disagree with me though.

I would steer clear of TR for my next car - the paint is so thin, if you get a stone chip it will almost certainly be down to the off-white basecoat. My dad's stone chips on his DBP GTD have never gone down to the basecoat, the metallics/pearls seem so much thicker. With no work or product on (as was the case with the demo me and mcmaddy tried out while waiting for our GTDs) it does look flat. When sealed and/or waxed up the colour glows and looks it's best at night. Paint thickness is making me err on reflex silver - i'm sure I read a while back that it is the thinnest metallic paint (thinking about stone chips again). I'm still torn, probably 80:20 Lapiz:Reflex. TR does hide a moderate amount of muck well. Reflex Silver will have better contrast with the black bits than the Lapiz.

Unless the slightly plain looking front bumper and seat cloth of the R sways you towards the GTI, i'd be going with the R. You don't buy either for mpg, and the fuelling costs are likely to only be £20 a month more than the GTI. The GFV of the R is such that an R costs the same on PCP as a GTI, a similar situation that the GTD shares with the lesser GT 150TDI. Going to ring my local dealer today and probably shoot through to Pulman Durham this afternoon to see it I can negotiate 10% off list and a decent part-ex price for mine.

Out driving today in the GTD and the lack of grip with even moderate acceleration has really peed me off (sh!tty Bridgestones! I will rotate my tyres and put up with them if I am getting an R for next March).

Was pleasantly surprised about the insurance on the R. I ran a number of scenarios:-

Me as sole driver - parked on drive/parked on road outside my house
Me and the Wife, assuming she'd just passed her test (she is going to take lessons soon as she gets a lift to work now on the way to mine, but will need a car of her own when I have to change jobs following impending redundancy.

£259 on my own, a tenner cheaper parking it on the road than my drive - presumably that's the reduced risk of someone breaking into your house for the keys, if it's parked on the road then the thieves can't be sure which house it belongs to.

£400 including a newly qualified driver - wow, potentially a new driver let loose with a 300PS car for £400 a year, unbelievable!

Jimble what spec is you R

Mines 5DR, manual, 19" Pretoria wheels, DCC, Pro nav. With the baby on the way we're still trying to decide whether to keep it and see how we go or get something a bit more "suitable"? :undecided:

Keep it you only need the boot space at the outset then you can switch to a stroller instead of a gigantic pushchair.

I'm thinking reflex silver keyless discovery Nav and leathers and that's only because the leathers are easier to clean if my little one throws up on them or makes a mess in comparison to the cloth.

Was surprised too just now when I tried a couple of quotes.

Cheapest I could find for a 2014 R was £465 but for a standard 2014 GTI it was £490, yet a GTI with PP was only £442!

How is it that the more expensive and powerful cars are cheaper for me to insure?

Maybe they think you'll look after the expensive car more? S3 was £40 more than the R, lack of ACC sensors as standard to potentially save you from a smash?

Reflex silver looks superb imo, so much so i wish i'd gone for it myself! If your concerned about swirls and marks i'd give Lapiz a miss if i were you, it looks great when you put some SERIOUS effort in but it needs to be treated with kid gloves unfortunately.
