Air Filter and Servicing...
« on: 14 September 2014, 08:08 »
Right I have used VW to service my car for the past 4 years its on Longlife 20k servicing. So anyway I take it to VW to have the service and later on at home I noticed that the air filter is not listed as being changed so I had a look.

Now interestingly enough at 20k I noticed it hadn't been done so I changed it, genuine part used. Going through all my old invoices I have now realised they have never changed it. So that picture is of an air filter that has gone through nearly 60k. I did notice the only thing in scope of the service is oil and filter. The rest seems optional when did air filters become optional, it seems that its more important to change the pollen filter. They have done the fuel and pollen filter twice, once at 2 years/40k and 4years/80k.

My air filter has been changed every 2 years, I checked it was changed as I always mark parts.. Plus mine has only done 13k over 4 years! But mines on time and distance rather than long life. It depends what service you had it booked in for, see abive link.

I have paid for two Interval services and two Inspection services, well that's what they call them on the invoices, its interesting as according to VW Herefords website http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/fixed-price-servicing Major Service is £299 I never paid £299 more like £269.

Which got me according to the paperwork Oil & filter change. Replace pollen filter. Vehicle inspection and report to include all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery, coolant levels, drive belts, braking system, steering, hoses, drive shafts, suspension and exhaust system. Replace air filter. Spark plugs (petrol engine) or fuel filter (diesel engine). Remove wheels and check brakes. Check/adjust tension of all drive belts. Check gearbox oil level. Check final drive oil level.

i.e.
20k Interval
40k Inspection
60k Interval
80k Inspection

I managed to get away with purchasing the replacement Air filter for £8 something, so I am not really complaining if it saved me £30 on the service cost.

Interesting if you click the link to the "Download service schedule" at the bottom its £35 to change the air filter.

My previous SEAT I did similar miles to what the GTI does and it never got an air filter change they just inspected it and said it was fine so reduced the bill. Yours on the other hand was way over needed changing looking at the photos.

Here's what the industry standard says: The air filter, Two components that should be replaced during regular maintenance, if the air filter is not replaced at regular intervals it will gradually become blocked and reduce the flow of air into the intake system. Many engine management computers now compensate for the reduced airflow, but performance will be affected because less fuel is injected and volumetric efficiency falls.

So  that being that i suppose on one extreme you have one hell of a dirty blocked filter and say you put a K&N filter in the ECU will match the up the much increased airflow giving an increased fuel consumption but better BHP.
Back in the day the air filter wasn't always changed. The mechanic would look and depending on the look it may even get blasted with the airline from the inside out!

Is worth just making people aware it feels a little more pokey its funny but it's been a bit flat for a while. It's an easy 2 minute job thread worth checking if you are a high miler like me.
