Your tyres don't need to be that good if they are in the air, so I guess you are right.

It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

I've driven on cheap tyres, normally wet round abouts are their down fall...ive found that the wall perish before the tread wears out. But your money, your car, your life, your choice.

Wow , I find that the quality of a tyre dramatically affects the drivability of a car.  On my Scirocco GT I have recently changed from Kumho Ecstas (apparently a mid range tyre but was actually really rubbish) to Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2s and the difference is phenominal and that is just when driving around normally, especially in the wet!

Personally I would never buy a budget tyre, you may even find you get much more milage from a mid range tyre which works out the same or maybe even cheaper in the long run.

I run Yokohama S drives on all 4 corners of my Mk2 and they are very good!

I bought a set of Kumho KU31s (I think...) in 225/40/18 for an Audi A4 I had a while back - good tyres in my opinion, wear rate was bloody phenomenal iirc.
Have had bad experiences with budgets though, bought a car with 'Nankangs' on the rear and better quality tyres up front.  At the first hint of rain did a 180 on a roundabout, was going fairly slow thankfully and they were in the bin more or less straight away.

Haha, Evergreen. I shredded a set of these in 1500 miles on my VR!  Obviously, 30mph town driving, (honest lol) but still, bit of a poor show in my book.

I'm currently running Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on ours and a few hundred miles in they're doing well, if that helps. Quiet, grippy - little unsure in the wet at the moment but that's probably just me finding my feet again.
